    All of my DIY projects

Decided to just make one thread for all of my around the house projects.

First Post is my fence. I sprayed a 1:4 bleach to warm water mix onto the fence with a 4 gallon sprayer. Then came behind with a pressure washer while the mix was still wet on the fence and lightly pressure washed the surface. You want to remove some of the wood just not create deep gouges.

After the wood dried a couple of days I picked up some
WoodScapes Exterior Solid Stain/Paint in the color of choice. 9 Gallons sprayed through a graaco airless rig. Two coats, waited around 24 hours in between coats. It definitely needed two coats.

Overall very happy with the results. I am positive i saved over a thousand dollars here.

                  The Kitchen.. dum dum dummmm

Thanks all. I am very pleased with the final results and so is my wife.

Now for what I've been tied up working on for a while. Our kitchen.......

I sound like a broken record, but I need to state that I am in no way a professional at anything! Just someone that likes things done right!

Okay, Here is the first picture I have. Notice the honey oak. EVERYWHERE.

I started by removing the backsplash, tearing out the fluorescent lighting, and patching it with new bead board.

Then I installed 4 LED can lights and a ceiling fan kit along with a lumitron dimmer.

The original plan with the beadboard was to paint it. So I masked everything off and went to painting! I also painted the wainscoting around the bay windows.

I used Sherwin Williams pro classic enamel and brushed this on.

Once i had the whole ceiling painted we sat back and decided that we did not like the look and went up to Lowes and bought drywall.

So my first time hanging drywall and it wasn't bad. I wouldn't call it a good time or anything! Big thanks to my dad for coming over to help hang it.

If you look in this picture you will see the demo being started on removing the step up bar. We didn't like how the bar separated the eating area with the kitchen.

Now it was time to tackle the cabinets themselves. I had done plenty of research and had decided to refinish them instead of painting. I removed the cabinet doors and numbered them (behind the hinge plate).

Then I cleaned the frames with a 50/50 mix of Denatured Alcohol and hot water, using a scotchbrite pad.

Then using a 220 grit sanding sponge (Klingspor from amazon). I lightly sanded all of the surface.

Plenty of tack clothes were used after that step to clean off all of the sanding dust. I bought a large pack of them on amazon.

OK, on to the "stain" I ended up using General Finishes Java Gel Stain. It was pretty difficult to use to get the look i was going for. After staining all of the cabinet frames and the doors it was time to clear them. I went with General Finishes High Performance water based topcoat in satin. This was sprayed on using a FujiSpray 4stage HVLP system. Three coats is recommended and it leveled out nicely.

Our kitchen sat at this point for about 7 months. I liked the look, but it had too many imperfections and just wasn't the look I really wanted. Looking back I would have done more than one coat of the Gel Stain to give it a darker more uniform look.

This now puts us to this summer 2019.

Back to square one! I tore out all of the appliances, the countertops, and took everything out of the cabinets and drawers. Cleaned everything with 50/50 denatured alcohol and lightly sanded with the same 220 kingspor pads. Tack clothed then created a spray booth inside of the house. Again I used my HVLP system and sprayed two coats of primer, sanding between the coats.

After going around with Sherwin Williams for weeks and 7 different stores on trying to find a location that would sell me Kem Aqua plus tinted.

I decided to go with General Finishes Milk Paint (not actually milk paint but a high grade latex) in Perfect Gray. Three coats sprayed through a 1.8mm tip was like spraying GOLD! It is amazing paint that levels out perfectly. I top coated again with three coats of General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in satin.
