    Offshore reel advice

Hello, I am currently looking for a reel that will handle a variety of offshore fishing conditions. Casting poppers, jigging, trolling, chunk or live bait. I currently have a 9/0 and would like something to complement it. I belive the 9/0 with 50lb is great for surf fishing since the line capacity is up there. Then spooling it with 80 makes it very capable for offshore. Casting a 9/0 is outside of my thumbs ability...
Lol. I have been looking at the mxl Raptors since they are mag reels. What other reels should I consider? Thanks

Thanks, any particular one you recommend? Should I be concerned if the reel is not 2 speed?

When fishing the avets do you have any problems with the drag? Thanks

Any of the reels above are good but don't forget the Shimano Saragosa or Stella also. They are great for casting; better than the open face reels in my opinion.

Open face reels are tougher and better for trolling and chunking. Spincast are great for casting poppers and/or live bait and for jigging.

You can cast the small avets but not as far are as easy as the spincasters imo.

The conditions you describe would typically be handled with 3 or 4 different road and reels. Are you fishing on someone's boat or do you own the boat? If you are fishing on someone's boat, they will typically have a set of matching trolling rods that the whole boat will utilize.

Do you typically end up bottom fishing most of the time? If so, get a nice 30lb rod and reel that is your "go to" when you make stops at structure. Your 9/0 has the muscle to handle amberjacks and grouper provided it is on a shorter boat rod.

I prefer jigging with a spinning reel and dedicated jigging rod.

Don’t tighten the drag unless in free spool or you will damage the system. Yes I’ve damaged one. It was on a AJ and I locked up an Avet 50.

I am boat less but go with others sometimes. Normally my abu 7000 works great for snapper and also kings. I was looking for something that fit between the 9/0 and Abu 7000.

I have used several under cast reels and have never liked them. I am going to stick with the conventional reels despite their disatvatge in ease of casting. Any advice on shimano conventional reels that will run in the 50lb line range with castablity?

Shimano Torium 16 or 20 with the 7-foot Trevala rod, spooled with 65 lb Power Pro and you are good to go in the Gulf without spending a ton of $.

I’m 50/50 accurate and avet these days.
My Accurate Valliant 600 is my current favorite.

Tranx 400 hg for casting, we have also recently purchased the Avet mx models and are perfect for snapper, grouper, deep drop.
