    Starter Axis Herd

    Hello Gents,
Im interested in stocking a portion of my ranch with axis deer. Im looking for about 12-14 head to start. I would prefer the bucks to be hard horned during the whitetail season and i would need them delivered to Zapata co. Also, i would need a couple shooter bucks in the group for next falls season. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hammer the Pasture Poodles before the axis deer arrival. We just lost a buck to them last week.

Coyote predication is going to be the greatest hindrance to establishing a herd. All the bucks you are wanting to be in the hunting condition (summer) will be born Dec-Feb, which is coyote breeding season. Predication is heavy in the winter. There's nothing else to eat beside axis fawns. Plus does breed year around so buck fawns born in winter are you summer hunting bucks and buck fawns born summer are winter bucks. You cannot control breeding unless you harvest summer born buck fawns. Does breed every 9 or so months so the timing is all over the place. Herds are usually 70% summer breeders and 30% winter breeders. I wish you good luck in trying. Here in Edwards Co we are experiencing coyote issues which helps control the axis population. Oh by the way Axis does are the worst mothers they will leave the fawns just about anywhere-easy coyote food. RS
