I've never seen an incumbent lose a primary. But, for 2020 how plausible could it be?
I'm seeing stories about challengers thinking that Trump won't have a chance in the general, and that this might be the time that someone could knock out an incumbent in the primaries. Part of me thinks that it would be a futile effort since Trump has already proven to be able to beat establishment republicans. Other part of me thinks that if the democrats can find someone to rally behind, they could beat Trump. And, maybe a new republican candidate could unify the party.
If there was a potential challenger, who would it be?
I'd like to see Mattis/Carson on the ticket.
