Plant ID: Small bushy plant, red fruit, looks kinda like a pepper

At my lease in the Victoria area there is this little plant that was thinking was wild peppers ( bird peppers or whatever ). They grow along fencelines in shaded areas. The leaf shape isnt quite right for a pepper, and the fruit is round. I tasted some, expecting heat but there was none whatsoever. Anybody know what it is?

I saw some of that on scoobyh’s place Saturday. Not sure what it was either. My dad tasted the fruit and spit it out. Said it wasn’t hot and didn’t taste like a tomato lol

I don't recommend you taste fruit from plants that you don't know what it is. We have the Texas Mountain Laurel / Cherry Mountain Laurel that produces berries that are toxic. As in cyanide.

It looks exactly like a pequin. https://www.wildflower.org/plants/re...id_plant=caan4

If it was a pequin he would know it the moment he tasted it. Ate a few on a taco one morning at the ranch and got the head sweats.

Finally found it. Jerusalem Cherry. It is slightly poisonous.

When OP tasted it and said no heat...why did people still suggest pequin's?

Haha. Still alive. I tasted it, didnt eat it. Im no botanist, but dont know of any plant in ( at least this part of ) the US that a taste will kill you.

I do believe yall are right, looks like Jerusalem Cherry. Thanks
