    Dehumidfier necessary in safe?

Anyone had experience with guns rusting in a safe in a low humidity area?

I guess I should first say I'm in north Texas, humidity isn't typically much of an issue. I've had a 17 gun safe for years and have not ever used a dehumidifier nor had any issues. I've kept one of the bags in it that is supposed to absorb moisture, not sure if it actually works or not but again, haven't ever had an issue.

I'm now considering upgrading to a slightly larger safe, maybe 25-30 guns, and am wondering if I should consider adding an outlet for a dehumidifier. Any thoughts?

I run a golden rod dehumidifier and large desiccant packs in both of my safes

I use the little moisture capturing tubs with the beads in them from the dollar store, they seem to help quite a bit and it's humid around the Houston area. You just have to keep an eye on them and replace when they get full of water.

North texas here. Mine is inside and we run the AC or heater in the house all the time unless the thermostat turns them off. I am still on my original box of silicate of 20 years and no rust issues. I think most of the folks that have problems are in high humidity areas and keep their safes in the garage or shop.

          This right here^^^

You don’t need it if your safe is in a climate controlled area and I’m near the coast sweating bullets every day

Golden Rod = cheap insurance. If you are like me there are guns in your safe that dont get touched for several years at a time.

What percentage of humidity should someone start to get worried?

This right here for me. I run them in both of our safes and have had no problems.

This, plus I oil down the guns that aren't seeing much use.

I agree with the guys that said cheap insurance .. just get a large canister of silica balls for $15 on Amazon and stick it in there.
