We had a pretty productive weekend in the Hill Country. My buddy, Jay, scored on this fallow deer Saturday morning and then almost stepped on the rattlesnake he is holding. The fallow was taken down with a Beman tipped with a Wasp Jakhammer and he went down in 30 to 40 yards. The snake was dispatched with a few well placed rocks. Trailboss, we could have used your machete!
Saturday afternoon Jay connected on this bruiser of a Hill Country buck. This buck had a huge body. It took 3 of us to get him loaded on the rack on the jeep. Of course two of us are getting old but even at that this buck was heavy as you can tell from the photo!
Sunday morning this buck showed himself one time too many. Last year he was nicknamed the "Wide 8". He had hardly any length to his tines so we let him go to see what he would look like this year. Well he still had nothing for tines so we decided he needed to be taken out of the gene pool. He is not the biggest buck but he is the widest buck I have ever taken plus he is only my second bow buck to date. I am proud of him and happy with the shot I made on him. The Wasp Jakhammer blew thru and he was spraying blood as he left. 66 yards later he was down.
I am thankful for three short tracking jobs and the fact that we were able to score even though we are not seeing the number of deer that we have seen in past years. Hopefully the acorns will all rot as well as the persimmons before our next hunt.
