Gunfire other than shotguns around dogs

quick question for the green screen. I was out shooting yesterday on family property and had my lab, Tank with me. I posted a couple videos of the shooting and had a friend tell me that shooting pistols around a dog can make it gun shy because they are louder than a shotgun blast. Last year was my first season hunting over him and I'd hate to cause him to be gun shy. Has anyone experienced anything like this or have any insight?

    Thanks in advance

Hasnt bothered my lab a bit. I think they are rather gonna be scared or not. Type of gun doesnt matter.

Back when I raised pointer dogs,I started all of them using pistols. Started with a 22 and then increased to a 38,then a 410. Never had a gunshy one.

Every dog is different. I shoot all kinds of guns around my dogs with no issues. They were raised to be accustomed to the gunfire. I won't own a "gun shy" dog

I hear that all the time. It is possible to make a dog gun shy by shooting pistols or rifles around one.

My lab loves what ever I am shooting ! My cows don't lift their head any more.

It might vary from dog to dog but it doesn’t bother my lab at all

Each dog is different. However, I’ve read several books on gun dog training that discuss how a dog should be exposed to gun fire when doing something they love (I.e. eating, hunting, playing). This helps build a positive association with gunfire. They can become gun shy if they have a negative association with the noise. So make sure he’s happy and exited when you shoot around him. Regardless, his ears are more sensitive than yours, so imagine being around guns without hearing protection and see if you would like it.

The first time I shot around my heeler/lab cross he took off running and I found him a couple miles away, still running.

                    Good guard dog though.

My dog automatically comes to heel when he sees me with a gun. They need to associate the gun with getting to do something.

Daughter has a cur rescue dog. We were sighting in rifles when he was 5 monthes old and each time we shot he would jump up and look in the direction we had fired We then shot pistols and he did the same thing

I'm of the opinion that dogs have different personalities, and will either be gunshy or not.....mostly. I do believe that enough shooting around one will affect their hearing though. Why do we wear ear protection and they don't ? The lab I owned the longest (when I duck hunted) was almost deaf at the end of his life, and he was less than ten years old.

Each dog gonna be different. Ive had more than one lab who didnt mind 10 hunters shooting over them but hated thunder?

Just about every sporting clays tournament we have attended someone has a dog in their buggy or walking with them. If upwards of 250 shooters scattered around dont bother then I dont think a pistol will

He didn’t seem to worried about it, but had a noticeable flinch on one shot. I’m just trying to stay on the safe side of things
