    Am I an idiot?

    Rifle scopes.
The more I try to learn about scopes the dumber I feel.
How many reticles are there? A bazillion?
Doesn't anyone make a scope that is multi-purpose?
    Just ventin' ya'll, just ventin'!

"To Leupold, or not to Nikon? That is the question? To buy a Vortex maybe a Trijicon or a Bushnell? Rage, rage against the Schmidt & Bender! Don't go gently into the Night Force!"
    I am an idiot?
    God bless!

    Yeah I am that guy.

Haha, I think everyone wants to make it harder than it is, I blame the internet. I found for hunting most scopes in the 150-300 dollar range and 3-9 power work just fine. Pick a name brand and the reticle you like, even the plain old duplex will work, and kill some stuff. But then maybe I cant understand the fine nuances of scope pickins

      If you have to ask....

But seriously really not that complicated get a simple duplex in a 4-12 zoom range and call it a day. Highly suggest something in the 500-1000 dollar range but I have turned into a bit of a scope snob after having several cheap scopes fail after using them pretty heavily.

I have never seen the scenario in which a Nikon 2.5-10 would not do the job I want done, but then all I do is hunt. No long range target and no shots on game past 350 yd. I use binos for looking.

Serious question, what do you consider using them heavily? Other than a 22 scope, I have not have any mess up. Some have been on fairly hard recoiling rifles, and some have been slammed around hard in 3 gun matches. I don't however feel the need to crank turrets all the time, as I sight in and leave it. So how are you breaking all the scopes :-) were they leupolds, Nikons, and burris or something else? I am talking in that 150-300 dollar range.

            Thanks for the input!
I like the International Hunter Reticle IHR,G4,PU recitals best. They are a rare bird & high dollar probably because that ain't cool anymore. I have given up on that feature and will go with a thin duplex.
We went & saw the grandkids yesterday. My son won a Weatherby 7MM-08 at a event back in October & he needed a scope. I told him to pick out a scope for his Christmas present. Yesterday he said he would like a Vortex Diamondback HP 3-12x42 BDC side focus. $318.00 with his law enforcement discount so we ordered it right there on the spot. I'm looking forward to checking it out before I give it to him. Maybe?
For the money it has a lot of really nice features & just as good or better warrantee as Leupold.
I guess that knucklehead solved my scope dilemma for me but......I am an idiot.

Redfield, vortex what ever their cheapest one is, nikon, bushnell, burris, niko sterling. Some were cheap package scopes that came with rifles. Some were once I bought. Some of these probably had to do with the cheap mounts and bases I was also using at the time. They were literally gettting drug around in the truck daily, were getting shot almost daily. Have since switched to higher quality rings, bases, and scopes and have had 0 problems since with any of them keeping zero.

I forgot to mention that I'm going to mount this on a Savage 10 FCP 308 SR. So I think the Vortex Diamondback HP 3-12x42 BDC side focus like my kid got will do real good & will not break the bank.
After all I'm not Carlos Hathcock or Chris Kyle
                Thanks again & God bless.

                    My impression:
If you shoot between 0 about 250 yards, 1 scope, just Plain Jane, about the 12 x on the top end will do just fine. If you think you might shoot stationary targets beyond 300, then a dial turrets for windage and elevation is in order. Top end magnification maybe 20 x.
If you are shooting moving targets beyond about maybe 200, then a TMOAR reticle or similar would be useful.
I am, however, no expert, like I said this is just my impression.
