    Southfork bound

    Semi live 2nd rifle elk. Loaded up and headed out. Stopping in Turkey Tx, home of Bob Wills for the night. Spend Friday getting everything ready and a little scouting and flyfishing. Then 5 days of chasing elk. First time using tapatalk so bear with me.

    Rolling down the road. Fixing to hit Dalhart then cross Raton pass and hit up Monte Vista for lunch. Grab our tags and unload at the cabin. Take an afternoon scouting trip to two different places and decide where we will start in the morning.

      Good luck man. I love that area, we stay there once a year and ski Wolf Creek.

        If you want to catch some fish, the South Fork of the Rio Grande that flows down from near Wolf Creek Pass is full of Brookies and Browns. At least it was 3 weeks ago...

          I watched your thread when you went and all the fish you caught. We will be in that area. Might make a float through South Fork down to our friends river house one day but mainly going to concentrate on elk.

              ^^^ same here. We go skiing every year the week after Christmas at Wolf Creek. Good luck on the hunt!

                Made it to South Fork. Grabbed some lunch and beers. View from the back porch. Headed out to scout two spots.

                    Got a little sleet/snow last night. Didnt see any elk but found a good spot above a meadow. Has rubs, beds, and lots of sign. Just hope they didnt leave the area during archery and muzzleloader. Got some breakfast and going to head back out this afternoon to glass a mountainside.

                      Long hike this morning. No elk. Lots of sign. Did hear one shot on the mountain. Maybe with the warm weather they are higher. Grabbing lunch at the cabin and then headed out to another spot this evening.

                            I wish. We hit it hard the last two days with 3-5 mile hikes. No bulls just cow. We only heard of 2 bulls shot in the unit from everyone we talked to including some guys who guide in the area. I did find a relly nice 4x4 mulie skull from archery season. That guy is bummed he didnt find that one. Got a little flyfishing in and caught some brookies. We are on the road back to Texas but will be back next year for archery mule deer.
