They support too many programs that I don't support. Used to donate all the time (80's) and designate my funds for boy scouts and girl scouts...or maybe boys clubs and girls clubs....which ever they were partnered with at the time. The do have a pretty large overhead so I am not sure what % of funds make it to the end user.

It is usually better to donate directly to your favorite charity.

I do. And, I designate where my funds go. Hospice and the battered womens shelters.

Same here. I was always the one that prevented the 100% donation.

Why is it better to donate directly? You can designate your funds with United Way. And, you lose company matching if you go your route.

I do not donate to any organization Whose CEO collects a 1.2 million dollar salary. So my final answer is NO!

Most companies will do the match regardless of the charity. You dont have to donate to the UW to receive the match.

Who's to say the money goes where they claim or where you specify? Do you know what their "pass through" % is? Ollie North's Marine Coprs & Law Enforcement Foundation is 100%. I see no need for a middle man.

Our company has a big UW campaign push every year. I do a directed donation through UW to the local chapter of the Boy Scouts of America (Alamo Area Council). Politics aside I got a lot out of being a scout and like to support any education of the outdoors to our youth.

I still "have" to. My wife and i support a lot of things i that I would rather add to.

In the military it was the Combined Federal Campaign---all the charities rolled into one. Our son was in the scouts at the time so I designated my donation to them. Best thing to do is research the organizations on-line and see what percentage of their receipts actually go to the needy as opposed to salaries and fund-raising.
