    Which Pellet Grill/Smoker?

I've relied on TBH for other grill suggestion over the years and now I am looking at a pellet grill. Some of the ones I've looked at online and like are the Camp Chef Woodwind, Green Mountain Jim Bowie, Traeger Texas Elite, & Rec Tec. I'm working with a budget of $1,000, so even though I like the Rec Tec the $200 shipping charges may rule them out. If I had a bigger budget I would look hard at the Yoder, but that's not in the cards at this time. The new Woodwind by Camp Chef has the sear box on the side which would be a big bonus since it can heat up to 900 degrees.

I am not limiting my choices to the ones listed, these are just ones that I've looked at online. I'm open to any suggestions or even which ones to avoid.

    Thanks

I have had a camp chef for 6 months or so (doesn't have the sear box) and no issues at all. gf's dad has had one for about a year now and his has also performed flawlessly.

I recently bought a smoke tube to keep the smoke a little more constant, and nomex gasket material for the lid to prevent smoke loss there (still lose a little smoke out of the top of the lid.)

      I've been watching them too

The steel on the Traeger are paper thin

I looked at the Jim Bowie by Green Mountain. They are at the Buccee's in Waller Tx along 290

The steel on the Jim Bowie is definitely heavier gauge than the Traeger

Not sure if the thinner steel is part of the design or easier to manufacture considering all the components like the pellet auger and electronics

It's definitely a trait of pellet smokers

      For what it's worth.....

      Good luck

I need to stop in Buccees and look. I'm hesitant to order something without seeing it first hand. The thin metal is the first think I've noticed on the pellet grills I've seen. I believe the Rec-Tec is a little heavier, but not sure by how much.

That's good to hear about Camp Chef. Now that I've looked at them this dang ad pops up on everything I look at. https://youtu.be/fulJLYgsfSw

I got the Camp Chef DLX just before the woodwind came out. I've probably gone through about 150lbs of pellets so far and haven't had any issues.

When I was deciding on pellet grills I really wanted a RecTec, but didn't know if I would like pellet grill so went with the cheaper Camp Chef. So far the CampChef has been great.

I looked at Traeger, specifically the models they had at costco when they were in town. The models I was looking at were similarly priced to the RecTec but didn't seem like the same quality, so I passed. I also looked at Green mountain but again, the price difference between that model and the camp chef persuaded me otherwise.

Pellet grilling/smoking makes things so easy I find myself cooking much more often than I did with my WSM or charcoal grill. If you want to do any "grilling" do yourself a favor and get the grill grates that fit the smoker you choose.

You should look at Louisiana grills too

I have a camp chef. I did have a blower motor short out. Customer service has been great. They overnighted the motor and sent 2 bags of pellets.

A buddy has a rec tec. It didn't arrive when they said. Apparently the freight company googled his street and said they couldn't turn around in his cul De sac. He called rec tec and got 40 bags of pellets free.

That said I would like a rec tec. I'll sell you my dlx [emoji2]

What are some of the things that cause you to prefer the Rec-Tec? I've watched so many review & comparison videos on Youtube, but of course they are really pushing their product.

It's bigger, the extreme smoke is nice and it smokes the entire cook. Camp chef smokes in spurts. Rt seems to be better built. I.e. casters, frame and hinges

But it's also 2x the money.

I was given a Memphis and love it. If I had to spend my own money I'd get a Rec-Tec just for the smoking capabilities alone.

I just wish they sold them at retailers so I could go look at them. I know the price is probably worth it, but that $200 shipping is a huge turnoff.

I didn't realize it was 200 bucks to ship and I think they hurt themselves not putting them retail market.

For what it's worth, the quality is there. Had you posted last week I would have taken pics of his Saturday. He did say it was completely assembled when it arrived. Call them, I bet they make it worth the 200

This would be my only complaint, the smoke tube doesn't add a ton, but it helps.

I love my Traeger. We use it almost daily.
