    Truck Buying Suggestions

Well it's time to get another truck. My 2005 GMC Sierra with the 5.3 V8 has been a great truck but pushing 240k and lots of wear and tear on the interior and exterior.

I'm looking to go the used route with a budget around 19k to 23k, give or take ....probably 2008 to 2012 year models (full size truck) look about right. I wanted to see what y'all suggest? I'm wide open as far as diesel or gas but not familiar with the good or not so good engines during these years? What do I need to look at and what do I need to steer away from. Any other input would be great and thanks.

If it was me I'd stick with a Chevy/GMC with the 5.3! Great motor!

Tundra, gas mpg sucks but you should have no problem getting 240k out of it.

2007-2013 5.3 were notorious for having valve issues with the Active Fuel Management. Some never had problems but there were lots that did and if not caught quick when it happened would result in a new engine. I rolled the dice on an 11 tahoe with the 5.3 but installed a Diablo Sport Sprint asap to disable the AFM and hope to give more life out of it. They are great motors with the exception of the AFM/VVT.

I didnt have any issues out of the 09 Hemi I had for a few years, ran it to 103k, was a great truck and got really good mileage for a crew 4x4.

No real experience with Fords or Toyotas.

In those year models and price range expect the truck to have 100k miles on it IMO.

I bought my 2005 GMC in 2008 with 37k miles on it for around 19k. It looks like those days are long gone. lol

They are Johnny. I have a 2006 chevy crew 4x4 I bought new and the sticker was 29700, and drove it out for 27k. That same truck is over 40k now.

The problem with late model used truck is, they either have a bunch of miles on them, and if they don't they want new prices for them.

I had a 2008 chevy Silverado 5.3 and as soon as I hit 100,000miles I noticed that I was anywhere from 2 to 4 quarts low...that's not a typo. A couple of times it would be nearly empty around 3,000miles. I didn't have a leak either. Te thing just burned oil like crazy. I now have a 2014 GMC Sierra and I like it much better. Hopefully I won't have the same issues.

If you stick with GM, get the 6.0l

bought a tundra last year after driving my ford for 16 years. loved my ford and love my tundra, it'll do everything I need it to (except pass a gas station). lots of power and tows good. have the 5.7 and it is a beast. had the 5.4 in the ford. better gas mileage with the ford but the tundra is just beefier.

Rumors are that the bottom of the used car market is about to drop out. a few guys I know looked at investing in Carvana, but got nervous based on projections of used cars dropping significantly in the near future. Not sure if you can hold out a year, but it looks like a significant drop is coming.

NP. That was just a quick search. I bet with a little time and patience a crew cab could be had within your specs. Good luck with your search

Ain't this the truth ... I have 115k on my 13 GMC and have had zero issues. Keep the synthetic running, but at my last oil change they said I was running low and I may need to start adjusting my usual change in order to compensate.

Dad has been in the used car biz going on 18 years or so, and I bought my truck new because of the prices 4 years ago. Nothing has changed, and there may be a downturn coming, but I believe that's just wishful thinking. Especially trucks in Texas.
