    Proposed Budget Concerns

From the president of the American Farm Bureau Association:

“The administration’s budget fails to recognize agriculture’s current financial challenges or its historical contribution to deficit reduction,” he said. “It would gut federal crop insurance, drastically reshape voluntary conservation programs and negatively impact consumer confidence in critical meat and poultry inspection….

“Clearly, this budget fails agriculture and rural America.”

Things that I've heard/read indicate that this new budget that they're trying to pass would cut federal crop insurance by 36%.

The threatened cut/loss to the conservation programs should be very concerning to outdoorsman, like ourselves. Just some food for thought!

What does federal crop insurance have to do with my lease in west texas or the land we own in east texas?

I'd hate to see crop insurance, conservation incentives, or inspections cut. But I'd love to see incentives for ethanol gone, and i'm quite sure there are hundreds of ways to cut that budget and still have all the services and protections we really need

Has 'crop insurance' become a scam these days? No burn me, I come from a long line of farmers!

You cannot be single issue voters. You have to look at the whole picture and budget. All industries will do better at finding ways to do the same cheaper, faster, better, and safer when given the motivation to do so. Removing the safety net that discourages them to not seek optimization of their business is a good start.

Totally agree. Same works for people. Now if we could really start to work on those big entitlements that actually affect the big picture. But nobody wants to touch those with a ten foot pole. COWARDS are going to send this country off a cliff. Everyone needs to put on their big girl panties and do what is right for this country....before it is too late.

Yes it has, but by and large it has been used for its intended purposes.

I agree everyone has to "give" and this may just be the beginning. Someone mentioned making farmers "work more efficiently." Wth are you talking about? Crop insurance has zero to do with efficiency practices and everything to do with mitigating risk. All the efficiency in the world won't stop a hail storm or drought or wildfire where the farmer has put in most of his input costs (fuel, seed, chemical & labor) and has ZERO revenue afterwards.

                    What's your solution?

So welfare is good as long as you get something out of it.

It is insurance, farmers pay premiums,'albeit subsidized, but it's not like they are sitting around on their front porch getting paid for nothing. They still take on plenty of risk and do plenty of work. It like all "programs" get abused, but in large it makes farming a manageable risk.

About time to get rid of some of the ag welfare. Everybody has to give up something to get our budget back on track.
