    Discada

Going camping with my daughter for her 7th bday this weekend and wanted a disc wok to cook on. I had a dozen old discs but they are pitted pretty bad. Built one anyway and we will see how it cooks.
Anyone have any experience using a pitted disc??

After welding up the hole, removing the rust and seasoning it with salt and oil then polishing it with an onion it doesn't look to bad.

Did the bottom too, to keep it from rusting.

Depending on what your cooking it may be harder to clean. The first one I ever had looked the same. I've used it so much it's alsmost slick and has such a good season it won't rust even if left outside in the rain!

Looks good! Do you mind sharing how exactly you seasoned it? I cant get mine to turn black like that.

I would have wire brushed it or grinded it smooth. Seems like you would get chunks of rust breaking off in your food.

I did. Those are pits in the metal not chunks of rust. I wire wheeled and then ran a flap disc over it. It was very clean and rust free.. I Soaked it with coke then got it real hot and started seasoning it with peanut oil and salt using a terry cloth rag. Kept adding salt and oil till it was black then let it cool some and rubbed it down with half a onion to clean it. It's very slick but i think the pits will make it harder to clean.

Kind of like a hammered Wok. Should work.

One of the best discadas we have looks just like that. Have cooked 100's of lbs of meat on it

The pictures it doesn't look like puts, but bumps. If it weee puts them I would be worried but if they're bumps then I would think over time you may get some that flake off. if they are bumps I would run a grinding disc over them, not just a wire wheel.

Enjoy your camping trip with your daughter!

I appreciate y'alls concern that it may look like I'm going to cook on a rusty piece of metal, but as I stated before, short of sandblasting this thing was as rust free and clean as possible before I started the seasoning process. I'm not an idiot and obviously know ya can't cook on flaky rusty old metal.
I was just curious if any one else had made one from an old pitted disc and did it make it harder to clean up afterwards or affect the cooking at all?

Here are some better pics of the "pitting". Not bumps

Nothing wrong with that. Mine looks the same and does the job

Great pictures, very clear it's pits.

Unless you're frying eggs on it I would think it would cook just fine.

I bet it will work great and just get better as long as you don't try to scramble eggs or something like that for a while.

Please tell me about polishing with an onion. What exactly do you do there? Just run with half an onion? What exactly does this do?
