    Restoring an old 40ton press

My boss gave me an old 40 ton hydraulic press. I checked oil and it was dry. I put oil in it and pump barely worked but cylinder did not move. Then sent pump and cylinder to a hydraulic shop for repair. Estimated cost came back at about $100 dollars less than a brand new one from Northern Tool. So I passed and got pump and cylinder back in parts. I found a source online that says they have seals and o rings I need, so they are on order for ~$60. Wish me luck I have never tried to DIY hydraulics but it looks pretty strait forward.

Here are the Working parts of the Cylinder and Pump

I myself would be crushing what ever I could find until I get bored with it.

Bend steel, crush stuff, press bearings in/out, smash fingers, lots of fun stuff.

Fellers, you can also set that thing up to bend metal like a break press with smaller shorter dies. Even home made dies (pipe or solid bar welded to flat-bar). And use it as a punch press. Either manual or automated, depending on what one wants to do with it. There are lots of uses for "smaller" shop presses like this. Especially if your room is limited in your shop. And you don't have the funds for new equipment because your just starting out producing some small parts of what-ever, for/as a hobby/for extra income at home.

Good luck on the rebuild TMEC. That reminds me of my early days in the mfg working man's world.

I plan on making a metal brake fixture to be able to bend metal after I am sure I can get the press in good working order. Also as some have stated to crush things or press out bearing or what ever. Waiting on seals and o rings to be delivered via snail mail. I will up date when progress resumes.

Can you share where you found the parts online? I actually have have the same press that i inherited from my grandfather. It's been wore out for years, barely works, but I can't throw it out.

I found them at HCRCnow.com. You can get number off website and I suggest you call them to be sure the correct parts are sent. These presses were made in different places with slightly different specs. I hope the parts I get will work.

Just finished rebuilding our 80 ton press. Seals were so bad it would only press to 5 tons and the pressure would then bleed off. Works much better now!
