    What to plant? (Gillespie county)

Thinking about planting some food plots this spring. Just wondering what would be best to plant as far as drought tolerant and beneficial to horn growth.

It is a little hard to recommend since you did not post the area or part of the state, or the size of the area you plan on planting. But I will say for me, the Sunn hemp planted with Iron Clay peas made it through this past year drought and just died away this last few weeks here in E. Texas. And some of those plots were hit pretty hard by the deer. I have been an Eagle Brand soy bean guy for quite awhile, have tried other soybeans but none have done as well as the Eagle Brand. The drought was hard on the EB Beans but the Sunn Hemp seamed to like the dry heat. I am sure others will post here their experience.

I'm close to Fredericksburg so the pressure will be hard. As far as acreage I'm not sure yet have never done any planting. My in laws have the equipment so the cost will be time ,diesel, seed and fertilizer. Does anyone have a cost per acre total they go buy

It Depends, a rough cost estimate might be around $100.00 per acre, lots of variables on cost. my EB soybeans seeds will run around, 180, Sunn hemp around 100 and IC peas around 50, this is just the seeds per acre and not the fuel cost, labor etc. But the rewards are hard to put a number on. How much is a happy feeling worth after seeing what all has been accomplished? Ck out Uncle fish, or Elgoto or others here. All seam to like the rewards

In that part of the state, with the high deer numbers, I would plant a minimum of 10 acres and fertilize heavy. turned spring seed mix is a good quality blend that should do well in that area.

where are you in relation to Fredericksburg? Just curious, I'm about 15 miles southwest.
We plant oats every fall on about a 1/2 acre plot and they keep it mowed off at ground level.
