You need a 400mm, but good luck with the price range.

I have the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. It's a great lens but you need light and a firm understanding of how it's supposed to be used.

I don't know your skill level, but you might look at the 70-200 F4L IS. It's a great, multi-purpose lens that gets great results.

I agree on the tamron 150-600. I have a 70D as well and they have paired together nicely for me.

This picture was taken with the Canon 70-200 f4L IS
The picture was taken after sunset.
It has also been cropped quite a bit.
The deer where about 100 yards so I cropped to get this.
Shot from a moving truck. Would have been great to have had the camera on a tripod

              F/4
              ISO 1600
Shutter speed 500 (which could have been slowed down)
              200 mm

The 150-600 would work with plenty of light.
I would love to get the 70-200 2.8 but means more money.

I have the Sigma 70-200 2.8 and love it. It's more versatile and great in lowlight situations.

I have a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L non-IS. GREAT lens. I use a monopod or tripod whenever I'm at slow shutter speeds where IS would be beneficial. Works just as well as IS in a lens and saves almost $1,000 in cost.

I found a used Canon 70-200 f2.8 on eBay for around $1000. It has been great!

Nikon D5000 doesn't have built in AF motor, so you can use only AF-S or AF-I lenses if you want to have AF functionality. For portraits it's usefull to have at least an f/2.8 lens (prime or zoom) in the range from 50 to 85mm. I would recommend the AF-S 50/1.4 Nikkor.

I have the sigma 70-200 2.8 with IS. Great lens and just a little above your budget. It's worth it

As stated above, the Tamron 150-600 or the Sigma 150-600 are both great lenses for right around $1000 dollars. If wildlife is your main purpose, the I think it is a great value for the money. I have the Tamron on my Nikon D700 and really like it a lot.

IMO the two lenses mentioned are like comparing apples and oranges. The distance you are wanting to shot would dictate the longer lens but the trade offs have been mentioned by Shane. I love my Tammy.
