Anybody trying any Spring food plots in the Edwards Plateau area? If you have any pictures and information about what you did and how it's working, it would be greatly appreciated. We are going to be starting some Fall food plots at our place in Menard County this year, but I wasn't sure how Spring food plots would do in the Edwards Plateau since the soil is so shallow and rocky.

Edwards Plateau Spring Food Plots?

Couldn't imagine trying to drag a disc through the rocky ground where I hunt in Edwards County. However my Uncle has an orchard with 39 fruit trees (peach, apple, pear, pomegranate) and some grape vines that are growing fine.
The only place I could imagine having a successful plot would be in the river bottoms were the soil is not as rocky and appears more fertile.

I bet a food plot would grow this spring with all the rain.
Best food plot I have found is a protein feeder. However, I admit I have not tried to do much in the way of food plots @ my lease in Kinney County. I have thought about planting something like this. I think it might actually do ok if you could hit a spring like this year and get it established.
Get ready for the hunting season with Imperial Whitetail Extreme! This perennial food plot mix is formulated to provide maximum nutrition deer crave.
Another thing to consider is if you have hogs there is a good chance they could come in and destroy it pretty quickly.

Edwards Plateau Spring Food Plots?
Get the farmlogs app on your phone. You find your ranch on an aerial map and it keeps a running total of rainfall for the year. It's very accurate too from people who have both used the app and monitored rainfall with actual rain gauges.
If I had the time and resources and could predict rainfall, I'd try to establish beewild bundleflower. I'd also plant a couple acres of kidneywood, goldenball leadtree, and eve's necklace (all highly preferred browse plants with high protein levels).Last edited by JMalin; 05-07-2015, 07:16 PM.
