    BIG smoker project

We have a really big smoker under way in the shop. Its a total of 16' long and consists of a very big piece of 36" pipe. We finally got the pipe set on the trailer and welded to the fire box. Now I need to figure out how to keep the fire from entering the smoke chamber. Ordinarily I would jut make it a reverse flow smoker with the diffuser plate protecting the meat from the flames. But, the guy we are building this for wants a "traditional" style smoker with a vertical smoke cabinet on the opposite end of the pipe from the fire box.

Does anyone have any idea how to either make this design a reverse flow smoker, or at least protect the meat from the flames if we put the stack on the other end from the fire box?

I will try to get some pictures of what we have so far sometime soon.

Tack some tuning plates in the bottom out of 6"x1/4" flat strap, start with small gaps like 3/4" apart then slowly get bigger until you get to the end. At the firebox give it 3/4"-1" between the firebox side wall, then gap 1" to the next tuning plate. That ought to keep the flame from really getting up there.
