    Made ME a knife.

Went out to the ranch yesterday to do a little bow hunting; this morning after this morning’s hunt I decided I was going home to make ME a knife. I wanted a that knife that would make me happy. I’ve made over a 1000 knives in my knife making days and today I had something in mind but not exactly sure what I wanted. This is what I came up with this afternoon.
This is certainly not a build along; just a glimpse of what I do.

This is a rough guestament of what I wanted but not completely sure until I felt it in my hand.

The final profile; I just kept taking off the steel I didn’t want, this made me happy.

After heat treat; edge quenched and tempered. Perfect blance.

A better shot of the quench line; I was going to acid etch it, but it’s mine and I know it’s there. The edge is 60rc. RAZOR sharp. Should skin and quarter several deer without having to sharpen it. Will test it this year on deer and hogs.

TADA; not bad for an afternoons work, I don’t feel bad knowing I have customers waiting on knives but I did leave the ranch early. Threw on some curly stripped maple, with 5/16 corby bolts, red liners. I’ll add more coast of finish the next few days and make the sheath.

I'll be adding this to my production line.. This one will be the model #108

It looks like you were good to yourself. What kind of steel did you use?

I like that. I need to understand the heat treating and hardening process better.

Yes it is; and I got to use it the first weekend out with it. It performed flawlessly not only skinned and quartered my buck it also stayed sharp enough to skin out the bucks head for a euro mount.

For years I've been using a Buck Drop Point skinner that my son gave me only because it was sentimental to me, but it never held an edge mine does. I get emails and comments on my website of how well my knives perform, and I might need to send myself an email.

I think us knife makers are like the mechanic who's car needs work or the carpenter who's front door is falling apart. I make and sell and sell knives year around, the last thing I want to do with my free time is be in the knife shop.
