    2006-2007 Fawn Crop

Most of us in South TX had trouble finding a mature buck this year. Why?

If we look back to the rainfall amounts of 2006 and 2007, we will notice that we had a below average year. That affected the fawn production those years and has in turn affected the amount of mature deer this year. If you are wondering where all the mature bucks went this year it can be traced back to a low rainfall year a deer generation ago.

Have you noticed a void in your mature age class this season?

A silver lining is that 2008 and 2009 were good years for rainfall and a large number of fawns were born those years. Most areas are stocked full of 4.5-5.5yr deer and the next few years should be outstanding.

I hope your right. Passed a lot of "ok" deer this year.

We saw lots of good middle-aged bucks but very few 6.5-7.5 YOs. The future looks bright but it was hard hunting for the old men this year.

We have noticed this across 3 different ranches and have been very selective on Trophy's for that reason alone. We have seen some brute 5yr olds that we are excited about for next year.

Our place in Dripping Springs is exactly the same. Cant find a 6yo deer to save my life. Like you said though our 4 and 5yo deer are plentiful and I have high hopes for the next two seasons.

Using rainfall data for 2011 and 2012; 2016 and 2017 are going to be terrible for me.

2007 was a wet year for us in McMullen county.

                    2006 - 0% fawn crop.
                    2007 - 110% fawn crop.

07 was wet for us also. We have numerous 6 year olds, but hardly any 5's. In 08 we only counted 8 fawns in our surveys.

We're showing 55" for 2006 43" for 2007 and those deer were hard to find even on camera. Saw more 3yos than anything and that yr there was only 25", but up until this yr there seemed to be more bucks still around from the 2004 year with 68" of rainfall. It's a cluster.

If you think this year was bad, wait until 2016 and '17.

If the 3yos I'm looking at are still alive at that point then that should be a year to look forward to! The 5yo crop won't be worth a flip though.

Yeah, those are generally the one's I was referring to being that 2011 and 2012 were so dry.
