    Need suggestions regarding bow noise

I recently bought a Chek Mate TD Hunter. It shoots great but its loud (string noise, I think). I've adjusted the brace height from 7 1/2" to 8 1/4". The larger brace height MIGHT be a little quieter, but not much. I put some cat whiskers on the string and again, it helped a little but the bow is still pretty loud. Is there anything else I can do? should I continue to increase the brace height? I'm shooting 29" cedar with 125gr point. The bow is 54" long and 49lb @ 28". Thanks for any help.

I've seen some people put velcro (the soft part) on the belly of the limb near the nocks, which makes it more quiet when the string slaps it.

You want quiet. Buy a AW selfbow. You may loose a little speed but you won't hear it.

Sam, I forgot to mention that I tried that as well. It may have helped a little but its still too loud. Are TDs just normally louder? Could it be the string itself??

Try positioning your silencers in a different position on the string. That can make a difference.

Also, if you are using a relatively lightweight arrow, up your total arrow weight to 10 grains per pound of draw weight or more. A heavier arrow will definitely help quiet down any bow.

This. When I'm setting up a new bow I will put the string silencers on so that they can be slid up and down the string. Most bows will have a sweet spot where it is at its quietest. I will shoot the bow with the silencers in different positions until I find that spot and then tie the silencers in permanently. I like to have someone standing to the side to listen.

I had a longbow once that was loud. I used all the trad type string silencers and then one day replaced with the Limb Saver Super Leech, made all the difference in the world. Actually had people commenting on how quiet it was. All I use now.

Also, you may want to try different silencers if moving the cat whiskers does not help. You can try yarn silencers, beaver balls, or others. Sometimes, it just takes finding the right combo to get the end result you want.

Thanks guys! I'm on the 3 rivers website now. I will pick up a few different types of silencers and move them around. One more question........What is the brace heights on yalls bows? Is 8.5" too much? Thanks again for your help.

The bowyer (Check Mate) should have a recommended brace height range for his bow. Both of my Sarrels takedowns, one longbow and one recurve, like a BH right about 8". But each bow is a bit different and I have never shot a Check Mate.

Me too. I shot with a guy who had two sets of Cat Whiskers on his longbow - tiny bundles that only stick out about 1". His bow was remarkably quiet so I thought I'd give it try on mine and it is working well. If you still have a pack of the whiskers it would be a cheap experiment.

7-3/4" on my Bob Lee 3pc recurve. But as Bisch said, all bows are different and checking with the manufacturer on recommended brace height range would be a starting point. For what it's worth, my bow is pretty quiet with just a "thump" sound with a yarn puff on each end and a 510 grain arrow thru the bob lee shooting 45#'s at my draw length.

Try raising your nock height.Make sure that your arrow is not deflecting off the shelf creating the noise. This is especially important if you are shooting 3 under. You may need to take it up 5/8" - 1''depending on your shooting style. Also check for a twisted limb.Even a slightly twisted limb will make a bow loud to shoot.
