Well, brothers of the bow, I shot my #1 target buck on Wednesday night.
I got to the stand Monday morning feeling very good. That morning hunt I didn't see a single deer, which is unusual. I got down and pulled my card to only find 88 pics for the entire month of September. "Curly" wasn't on it a single time. The next 2 days were just like Monday morning. After 4 sits I had only seen a doe in 2 fawns. I was not feeling confident at all going into my 5th sit. But, my buddies told me to "Ride the hole" because he lives in that timber. At 6:58 PM on Wednesday "Curly" visited my feeder for the first time in 33 days. I couldn't believe my eyes. This 6.5 year old was at 16 yards. I had buck fever worse than ever. I drew back placed the pin behind the shoulder and hit my release. Not sure what happened but I hit him far back. He ran off looking healthy as a horse.
I felt horrible. The biggest deer I had ever seen gave me a chip shot and I messed it up. Called my buddy and he said I should back out and wait til morning. I agreed. After 15 minutes I got down to look at my arrow. Good, dark blood. Figured I got liver and we should recover this deer in the morning. I then looked in the direction he ran in. I started smiling ear to ear when I saw that white belly laying 40 yards from my feeder!! I had just killed my best buck ever. A giant 12 point with my matthews bow!!
I scored the buck and didn't believe it, so I got my buddy to score it. He got roughly the same score.
170 2/8 Gross. 17 4/8 inside spread and had a 15 4/8 left G2. Time to head to the taxi!!! Had an awesome trip!!!
