I'll help you out as best that I can

Welcome as I have been welcomed, first of all have you purchased the public hunting authorization on your hunting license? If not get it, it is a $49 add on fee. With it you will get two books from TPWD within a week, and that will open up about roughly a million and a half acres I think of public hunting lands across the state, everything to small game /dove leases that you can hunt to roughly 100-150 thousand acres of National Forest Lands that are available to you, and much, much more, depending on location and game species you can hunt hogs all the way until Aug. Then all you have to do is walk out there with your bow, muzzleloader, or shotgun. You can hunt the Sam Houston National Forest, Crockett, Angelina, and Sabine. There are also about 35,000 acres of timber company forests in Newton county that are bow only areas available. Get the books and study them, follow the rules, get out there and scout and see what you can see, enjoy the resources available to you and don't abuse them, laugh at the squirrels barking at you, and let the little deer walk and watch them play, learn, shoot your bow, and then shoot your bow some more. Be patient, your shot will come, some sooner than later. Take your kids and make sure that they wear the orange safety gear that is required, as well as you, during rifle season, camp out and show them how/ let them build a camp fire, then sit around it and tell them stories and let them put the logs on it and roast marshmellows. Be safe first of all, and be aware that there are other hunters out there, let them have their space and go find your own, proven fact, most people hunt within a quarter mile of some kind of road, major trail, leaves the rest of the territory a sanctuary. That is where what you are looking for can be found in abundance, keep your secrets, but don't be afraid to share them, there are more deer in this state than is possible to count, if I can find them then so can you, just make sure that your shot is ethical. 100% fair chase, that is the way that Daniel, Davy, Teddy, and Ernest did it. Enjoy, and sorry that I cann't help you with Amstiad, yet. Good Luck.

You dont need a public hunting permit to hunt Amistad. They require a special Amistad permit. It costs $20. Bloodhound who is also a member here and myself will be out there next weekend if you want to meet us out there. We could get you started and show you the ropes of hunting out there.

Depends on the area, most public land in texas requires the $48 annual public hunting permit, but other areas like fort hood have their own system going and charge $100 yearly usage fee, while others like corp of engineers property on georgetown or lake waco have a drawing/proficiency test to decide a certain quota of hunters for the year. There is public land in texas but its pretty limited compared to other states.

Jrenya920,where do you live???Up in Wise Co.You dont need any license except your hunting one and then there's Lake Whitney and Aquilla, but public land is hard and can sometimes be very frustrating, cause you dont usually see much every time out,but put in your time and it will pay dividinds..Good luck....Brian

Amistad is the only place I hunt. I usually see 10-20 per weekend. There are no trees down there so don't bring a treestand. I hunt with my recurve a couple of times during the season. There are a couple ways to hunt down there. One is spot and stalk. Or you can sit in a cactus and wait for one to come by you. I usually sit on stand in the mornings and evenings, and spot and stalk during the midday. I have taken 2 small bucks and 3 does out there in the last three years.

I see t least 3-4 Pope&Young deer per season. There are some really good deer there. You just have to put in your time and find them.

Some very big deer down there, but like any public land be prepared to put in a ton on scouting and work before you can get a deer.

And hunt during the week, like me. After over 15 years of being hunted, the deer know whats up. The majority high tail it outta there around thursday and return around tuesday. Don't get me wrong, you'll see deer. I've seen and killed game during the weekend, but avoiding the people usually gives the best chances. If nobody can help you out, I don't mind giving you a hand with whatever I can.

My advice on Amistad is to take the advice of these guys who hunt there. If they offer to meet you and help you, take advantage of it. It will save you tons of time because there is a big learning curve there. I hunted there last year, I never drew back but it was a lot of fun. But it is not easy.

                        Good luck!

I will be back out there on Dec.8-10. If any of you guys have wanted to hunt out there but ain't got around to it, I formally invite you out. Myself and Bloodhound will be out there and will give any fellow TBH brethern advice and pointers on how to get started out there. We will be at the American Campgrounds staying in cabin 4. Stop by after dark and socialize.

Justin, come on now, tell them about the buck you saw last time down there. Wish I could make it down this weekend, but I already have made arrangements to hunt with a buddy. Count on me being down before the end of the year though.
