This story starts 2 years ago while I was doing some summer scouting at my good friends ranch. While sitting in the ground blind, a unique buck walked in that really caught my eye. He had the largest Roman nose that I had ever seen on a deer. It was an easy decision to name this deer "Caesar". Hunting season came and went with only 1 sighting of Caesar. This past summer I spent numerous weekends at the ranch scouting and preparing for the upcoming season. While I never laid eyes on Caesar, he did make his presence known on my trail cameras. With the knowledge that Caesar never visited the corn feeders, I had set up a ground blind near the area that we had seen him on the cameras. This past weekend would be the first weekend that I would be able to hunt...I was pretty pumped to say the least. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning had passed with no sightings of Caesar. I had a feeling that after all the rain the deer might be on the move, so I decided to stay and hunt Sunday evening. After spreading out some corn by hand and getting settled in, some does and fawns came in. A small buck joined the group and I thought that might be it for the evening...off to the right I caught movement and saw the unmistakable drop beams coming into my shooting lane! The buck had fed for a few minutes giving me no shot opportunities when an unseen doe behind me started blowing and stomping. All the deer took off running including Caesar. I knew it was over. For whatever reason, Caesar stopped and turned back to look at the doe. This was my chance. I came in to anchor, let my pin settle, and the shot broke without thought. I watched the arrow sail to the exact spot that my eye was on and I knew that is was all over! A very bloody and short trail later, laid the most unique, massive buck I have ever seen. I knew when I put my hands on his baseball bat beams that I had underestimated the size of this deer. With over 43 inches of mass, 26 inch beams, and 15 scorable points Caesar's final score totaled 170 6/8! Hands down my best buck ever. I still don't really know what to say or feel...what a great hunt, what a great deer!
