Anybody get selected for LR GV NWR?

I am not for sure if I should post this or not as there is no information about this refuge listed on the web that I can find as far as hunting. I heard about this hunt last year and I was drawn. It was first time hunting public land, so I was not for sure what I was getting myself into. I feel that I learned a lot and I was lucky enough to be selected this year as well. I know there are some good deer in there. I was just wondering if anybody has hunted this place before or they are going this year.

I hope to keep the names of the places and stuff out of it so google does not pick it up. That is why I put a space in the LR GV in the top.

I just mailed off my hunt permit papers for this hunt. I sure wish another TBHer was going to be down there. Should be a good time to hit the horns together and move around a bit.

        Heath,

I guess I didn't get drawn. I applied for the first time this year but havent gotten anything. I wish I had more info but I have heard they have some good deer on it. Did you get drawn for the bow or gun? I applied for all of them. When did you get your notice?

I got my notice about 3 weeks ago and the Oct. 19th was the deadline to send in the stuff for the hunt. I believe a second chance drawing will be held for extra spots that did not send in there stuff. I would call and make sure you are in the second chance drawing and BS with them a little. I think last year I was not selected in the first round, but BSed with them enough they put me in. I am doing Dec. 13-17 which should be prime time. I was drawn for archery.

Last year I had some inside info on a spot that I setup and hunted. So I only looked at 2% of the place. This year I may expand, but I feel good about my spot last year.

That place is way down there, where did you get info to apply for the draw? There is none on there website like the other NWR's.

I was told about it from a friend who has a friend who has land that borders the NWR. I have heard that it is a very secretive draw, but word is getting out. I have been drawn the last two years. I know that I have another buddy that lives 30 minutes away from there and has lived there his whole life and did not know you could hunt it.

huh? wonder why they would want to keep it a secret, all the other NWR don't exactly advertise but you can find info on there websites. The guys who run the place might not be real pro hunting, I have heard of this before on certain WMA's that are draw only, they only allow the hunting because the state requires them to let the public to use the property.

I think it has more to do with the hunters keeping it a secret. The people at the Refuge have always been very friendly and ready to help.

The area that you can hunt in the LR GV is small. If you wanted to a man could walk the perimeter of the hunt area in a few hours. In the past it had some quality deer but in the past few years they have been exploring it for oil and gas. I was picked last year and it was a disaster, I saw two does on the weekend that I was picked on. The oil company people that were there doing the seismic research worked Mon-Thurs and we hunted Friday - Sunday, needless to say the animals were spooked. The others that I know that were picked also had pretty much the same experience. It was so bad that this year people did not apply and almost everyone that applied got picked. But there is bad news for those that got picked.
Today 11/06/07 I spoke to a friend and said he that they flew over the area for a while and did not see 1 animal. He also said that an oil pump was just set up smack in the middle of it. Trucks were going to it about every 30 minutes.
Man that really sucks, we really don't have many places to go but now one of them is being overrun by traffic.

which refuge is this ? I only know of two refuge hunts in the valley, but have not really heard of this one, unless it is Santa Ana refuge. If it is I hear there are some decent deer in this area and yea it is kept kinda "secret"

It is 6000 acres. I was picked for this year and hunted it last year as well. I really hate to hear this info as I was really looking forward to the hunt down there. I heard that they had some oil and gas people on it last year, but nothing about this year. I will only be losing my $50 bucks. I was well off the beaten path and had no other hunters around me. I guess it will have to be wait and see. I guess I will just have to make a trip to Mexico with Farmdog instead of hunting the Refuge. Please keep me posted with any updates you might get as I am coming from 7 hours away.

                          Heath,
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. 6,000 acres, hmm I sure would of thought it was less than that, since I have probably walked about 2/3 of it I figured from the map that there wasn't much left. Even the lady that was in charge of it 2 years ago said that she had walked the whole thing. Too bad they don't open up the part that they use for the Youth rifle hunt. That area is crawling w/ deer and Nilgai. My nephew shot a nice 10 pt, his first deer and he got a 10 pt, at the refuge!

                              RCHR,

I would be interested in hearing if your friend flies over it again in the upcoming weeks. I wonder if the Oil and Gas people have been on the place this year?
