Let me start by saying that this buck, after 15 years of bowhunting, is my best buck to date!
He came from behind me on my left. The forest behind my stand was thick and dark—White Pines so close together that visibility was only a few feet. I was doing my usual checking from left to right and right to left and I never heard him coming. He was just there. Emerged from the dark into the light with not as much as a twig snap or a leaf crunch.
I had no time to think. Luckily, I was already holding my bow as I usually do in the last hour of the afternoon sit when things tend to get active again. All I had to do was raise my bow up and draw. And that’s what I did. He was at twelve yards when he stopped and started to turn his head in my direction. At that moment I squeezed the release and heard a loud “thwack.†He was fatally hit, a double lung shot which also clipped the top of the heart.
I knew then that I had just mortally wounded my best buck ever. I stayed in my stand for about an hour and then tracked him in the dark, in a light freezing rain.
I am thrilled that I got him and am going to have a shoulder mount done. He was a hard won NY state whitetail and I am very proud of this kill. Thanks for reading!
