    Plan A Hunt

I've got friends around the country that have hunt get togethers every year, but they do them on public land, and they have a blast.

I was thinking this would be a great idea for us to do, but I have no idea where would be a good public access area to provide both camping, and access to decent deer hunting, especially if we had a large turn out.

There's a lot of you I would love to share a camp with, and this seems like the most likely way of getting to do it, because it would keep the cost down for everyone.

Good idea ? Bad idea ?

Some of you public hunting guys chime in here with thoughts on how we could pull this off, and where would be good areas for consideration.

I would be interested as well depending on dates and location! Please keep me in mind!

Would be great. But out of state people like myself would be at a severe disadvantage as far as camping gear and the like.

We have to depend more on ranches(it would seem) with accomidations.
Planning on being in Texas in October 2011 for two weeks.

I think the new Caddo archery only unit during the gun opener would be great. I don't know about the campsites up there though...

Would we be able to bring our campers? Sticbow, I wouldn't worry about it to much, I'm sure someone will have room or equipment to share.

I guess that depends on the area Deb, but would be great if possible.

Mark - what Deb said. I'm sure theres enough folks here to share enough of their camping gear with you to make it work out for ya.

Hmmm...sounds good. I will keep my ears open and see what we can do to help.

The reason I suggested this is 2 fold.

1 - It would be a great opportunity for us to get to know each other as hunters. I know this is done at times on some of the private (pay to hunt properties, and that is great also), but that leads me to #2

2 - It offers an opportunity for those who don't have the funds to pay the lease/day hunt fees if it is planned on public property.

A couple other of my thoughts on this are:

1 - bowhunting only. Preferably in an area where there isn't any gun hunting allowed at the time we are there.

2 - keep it in Texas. Again to keep cost down for everyone.

Brushy Hill outside of Sabinal is big enough (13,000 acres) and has enough lodging for a big get together. I went on one of the LSBA hunts there and had a good time. I believe hog hunting during the off-season is around $80/day. The animals are educated, but I imagine they will be on public land as well.

Not free, but not bad considering you get the comforts of home and don’t have to worry about some yahoo running around with a rifle.

                        Rick,

Are you thinking about something on a weekend, long weekend or week long type of thing?

I'm thinking a week long type thing, where folks arrive the first weekend starting on maybe friday, and leave the following weekend on sunday, but folks can come and spend as much time as their schedule allows them to during that week.

If they come stay all week, or if they can only come be there one day, then so be it.

Makes sense. Depending on dates, with my job I could do a nice long weekend for sure!

Keep it in Tx kinda limits your options a touch. I am not well versed in the public hunting scene down there, but seems like you get a group of a dozen or so on one of those smaller WMA's you could be crowding it with the other folks. Could look at a close-surrounding state like AR, OK, or LA might have some larger forrest land to do a hunt on. Tags would be more, but not substantially.
