Default Ohio Snake

Found this guy today while doing yard work. He's a good guy. I checked him out a bit and then put him back against the foundation where I found him. Funny thing is my wife is cool with critters that are good guys, but my neighbor that out weighs my wife by a hundred pounds, and is male, freaked out about this guy!

It is what we call a milk snake, or king snake. I wonder if that's the same as a gopher snake?

Have you ever actually saw a copperhead? They look much different than this.
Eyes are wrong, color is wrong, pattern is wrong, head is wrong. Totally different snake.

Rat snakes are VERY common and there are many different sub-species, so yes most snakes people see are probably some sort of rat snake.

Generally, yes, but Ohio has them. Here's a link.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gopher_snake

That pic looks like he has keeled scales (a ridge down the middle). King snakes/ Milk snakes have smooth scales. The head is a dead giveaway. Here's a link to the head of a gopher snake.

http://fireflyforest.net/images/fire...snake-head.jpg

Hey badger- did that snake hiss? Gopher snakes will usually hiss loudly when they defend themselves, rat snakes rarely.

Good job letting him go.

Gopher snakes make great pets and calm down very quickly after being caught. Great pet for kids. Had several and so did my kids.

He never hissed, but he did try to shake his tail. That allways amuses me. I've had common Garter snakes do it.

I'll go back over the other pics I took, I think he was smooth down his back. I hope not though as I wasn't aware of gopher snakes around here. That would be really cool!

I'll let you know!

Gonna be hard to tell from pics on the scales unless you have a really good quality close up. Look for a small line down each scale.

I'm still betting gopher based on the head and body diameter. Gophers are constrictors and are a little heavier in the body than rat snakes and racers.

How long was he? Looks good size in the pics. 5+ feet?

If you can, email me a few of the original pics (not resized) and I'll see what I can do. tcub1911@gmail.com

Okay, ya'll got me confused now. Just looked up Milk Snake and got a pic that's REAL close to those posted. All the milk snakes I've seen were the red, black and white versions (milk snakes are actually in the King snake family). Had never seen this color scheme on them.

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...num=4&ct=image

I'll call it 50/50 based on the pic, but based on the location it probably was the milk snake.

My humble apologies.
