Hey anybody ever seen any turkey out at granger?

In the 90's I saw turkeys out there all the time, on the noth side of Willis Creek and also near the primitive boat launch. Haven't seen or heard any in quite a while though. Have a decent number of them on my lease just east of the dam though, so there's still a few in the general vicinity.

Texas Parks and Wildlife released several hundred at our river bottom (the land that butts up to primative boat ramp) in the 80's. My dad watched them haul butt out of the trailor and he never saw one again. Ive seen them though. I always let them live. I like to watch turkey more than shooting them. I ocasionally see turkey hunters walking along the fence line in the spring.

You have turkey over there? Thats awsome! I havent see a turkey east of the dam in over 10 years. Good to hear that there are still a few.

There are some turkeys out there, but to hunt them you have to be draw.

GT, ya over there by your land is where I used to see them all the time, like walking upstream from the primitive boat launch. I was really surprised to see any on our place, but it is pretty good tyrkey habitat. Last spring there were several groups roosting in the river bottoms and also along Pecan creek. One of the flocks had two white domesticated hens with them. They're also bigger than the turkeys I'm used to seeing. I suppose they released Eastern birds over there instead of Rio Grande subspecies?

Thanks for all the Turkey responses. I wasn't sure if trying to draw a tag or not was worth it. As for me I haven't ever seen them but if they are still out there I'm sure we will start hearing them gobbling here soon.

Anybody have any luck today hog hunting? We weren't so lucky. How bout you River Rat?

Talked to the ranger today. The official # of hogs killed furing the hog shoot was 53. 23 of them below the dam. They tested them again this year and will post warnings if anything that maybe of concern comes up. Also, told them about the dead cow near 7. The ranger and the sheriffs department went out to check it out to see if it died of natural causes or was shot. Didn't see any live pigs below the dam today. Just a really big cottonmouth near the dam.

I got close to them, one sounded BIG when it growled at me. I had some corn out and they were waiting for it to get dark(or for me to leave). I got the crap out of there once it started getting dark, too scary by myself LOL. I was thinking what do I do if I shoot one? Do I track it through that thick crap in the dark by myself?

I think I will stick to morning hunts unless I have a partner.

You could leave it till the morning but watch out for the cyotes and bobcats they may get to it before you do.

I was thinking about waiting till next week to go out again but..... if anyone eants to go Sunday mourning im game. If we can get a few guys to go and push the bloodweeds together by the PC then I will enforce martial law at my house and tell my GF Im going LOL Anyone wanna go? If we go I wanna be at the primitive campground at least a half hour before daylight so we can here were they bed up and also maybe catch some stragglers. If no one wants to then Ill be out Tueday afternoon.

Also, can I ask you guys to discribe or post pics of your hog hunting setups? I know im getting a new bow before deer season and I want to convert my deer/hog bow to a full time hog hunting set up. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Just got back again. Did not see nothing again. I think the heli shoot moved them into the woods more. I've been dumping corn and they come through at night but even busting brush I do not see them in the day.

Saw a couple guys with shotguns and a dog. Are dogs allowed out there?

If hillcountrybowhunter were here this weekend I bet he would meet up with you guys, he can always find them walking in and left from the primative launch area.

Im planning on getting there from the water treatment plant. I may get my bro's mountain bike to make the trip faster out there. I bardered with my GF and I have until 9:45 to hunt, so thats like two hours. I have to go to church. Sunrise is at 7 so Lets meet at 5:45. If we walk it's about 35 to 40 minutes, if we ride bikes it will be quicker. Anyone else game. We need to have a few more guys.

Just stopping in to say Hi to everyone. I am new to this site, and 2nd yr bowhunting. I've never hunted public land but my cousins Live in Taylor and have been hunting out at Granger for sometime hope to get out there soon hope to see you guys around sounds like alot of fun.

Ok TXFIREFIGHTER, it looks like its you and I in the early mourning. Hopefully paintman will meet us coming up from the boat launch.

Lets me at the circular drive by the water treatment plant no later than 6. That should give us enough time to get out there right before day break. I can only hunt until 930 at the lastest. Hope to see you there. If I here from you before ten pm tonight and you like coffee Ill bring it.

Paintman, sorry to hear about your mother in law. I shot one "BUT"....... heres the story.

TXFIREFIGHTER and I got out there a little later than we wanted but got on pigs pretty quick. Met up with a guy who was camping at the PC and said he had been seeing them also. Isaac and I started pushing pigs around trying to get shots but just kept on missing them. At about 9 we both parralled each other with a thicket of blood weeds between us and all of a sudden I see this pig come out of the weeds on only its two front legs. I shoot at it, 40 yards and miss high, he runs into the weeds and I take up after him. I was right on him most of the time and pulled back two times but couldn't get a shot becasue It was to thick or I didn't have a shot to him. A few times I got right up on him and he turned towards me and tried coming after me but couldn't, had he had both legs... wow he woulda hurt me. So I make it to a partial clearing in the weeds and finally get a shot at about ten feet. He starts to move so I run up next to him and begin to try and pull my arrow out so he doesn't roll and bust my $13 arrow, I got it out and was then joined by the other hunter who was at the PC and he gave me his knife which I used to pu the pig out of his misery. I pulled him out and got pics with my phone. He was small, maybe 50/60 lbs but it was fun. He really smelled rotten, like something was really wrong with him, although we could see why his legs were broke so we decided to pull him into the weeds for the coyotes.

Sooo, I got one but it was a mercy killing.

Had fun meeting TXFIREFIGHTER, great guy. i hope to hunt agin with him soon.

Planning on going back out Tuesday mourning.

I want to be out there early. Prolly 5:45 to get out there at day break. Do you have bikes? If we can bike in we wouldn't have to get there so early.

I was out there a month ago or so and saw alot of sign but no hogs. Lots of bloodweeds out there also.

Anyone gonna be out there tomorrow morning? I got a kitchen pass for early tomorrow. Is it easier/faster to get to the PC by coming in from the 95 bridge or from the gates at the PC parking area.

BTW, I spooked a pretty good size pig Monday around noon that was bedded down about 1/2 mile southwest of the PC in the trees rather than the bloodweed. I couldn't get a shot 'cause he was moving so fast and when he came out of the brush he spooked me just as much as I spooked him. LOL
