Went out and parked at 7 today and made my way to the river slowly and then back towards 6 before headin back. Only had a couple hours so didnt get to go where i wanted but nice anyways. Saw lots of deer, several times. At one point there was a decent 8 with a doe about 75yrds in the thick and they just sat there and stared as I slowly walked the paths. Seemed kinda wierd since all the other deer spooked when I found em. Anyways no hogs were heard or seen, and there were very few fresh tracks. I dont really know the compartments weel enought to know where I made it to but thought Id give a small report anyways. Gunna try and go Friday or Sunday anyone goin that I could tag along with? Thanks

Im new to this site but I have been hunting at Granger between lots 6 and 7. I was out today and didnt see much at all. I usually see quite a few deer but only saw two today. The two times I have seen hogs this year I have seen them in the blood weeds along the river between 6 and 7.

Here is a question. Anybody ever see any quail while out after hogs? TPWD says the bloodweed (aka giant ragweed) is great winter quail forage. So there should be piles of them. But I don't think I can ever remember flushing a covey at Granger.

Im betting if there were far fewer hogs in the bloodweed you would see a bunch. Im betting the hogs just rip through the nest and prolly eat the eggs and young birds. |

Here is a hog I shot today behind the dam on the right side. He is an awesome looking 80# blonde boar. He didn't make but about 20 yards before he squeeled out. I have shot a hog the last three times I have been to granger 2 with my compound and 1 with my recurve. The one with my recurve was hit a little too far back and was never recovered.

From la grange your looking at about 60 - 65 miles to V across from gate 7, which is where I would go if I wanted to shoot a hog now. Had some buddies just call and they shot 2 more in that area this weekend, thats 4 hogs in two trips out there for them, that place is on fire this year.

He was with a group that had 3 big black sows and about 10 smaller ones ranging from 15to25 pounds. The large dark spot was some of the mud that caked on his hide from me having to drag him a little ways.

Hey Hard Horn. About what time did you stick the blond, daylight or dusk? (I guess this blond did not have more fun). Were they moving in the open or under the trees?

All right, I am recently returned to the Great state of Texas and need a place to hunt. I hear Granger has its share of hogs. But granger has some space to it. i have been up there and walked around some, but really dont know where to go. If anyone could set me in the right direction, or would be willing to let a novice hog hunter tag along, I woudl appreciate it.

Really, they can be just about anywhere, but:
Hottest spots: San Gabrial unit, between gate 6 and 7 on both sides of the river. The Pecan Grove unit, anywhere around heavy cover. Technique 1. Stalk quietly through heavy cover during the day, and spot them before they spot you, then stalk up close. You will need to be on some kind of trail to move silently unless after a rain/dew. Technique 2. Move quietly in the open on cloudy/rainey days, glassing with binoculars for pigs moving (they dont move in the open much on sunny days), then stalk up close. Technique 3. Find a heavly used game trail and set up down-wind in the early morning or evening. Most of the time the pigs will have stopped/started moving by the time shooting hours start/end, but sometimes you will catch a laggard. Good luck! There are so many pigs at granger, and they are so nocturnal, that we bowhunters are unable to keep the numbers in check. Go get some, and do the taxpayers and local farmers a favor! |

Ok, gave it a try this afternoon. Couldnt get out there until about 1:30. Went to the Pecan grove for awhile this afternoon. Ran across about a dozen carcasses three nice deer some rabbits and a couple squirrels. No live hogs though. everything I saw as far as indicators was a little older as well. I was on the south side of the river. Today was more a scouting day anyway.
Headed over to San Gabriel at the end of the day for about an hour to check that out. I think the next trip out will start there. I found a really nice wallow that had been used quite a bit. There was a rather large "bathroom" as well about 50 meters off from there. I believe it has good potential, but you all are the experienced ones out there. You tell me. I started at the boat launch, I guess that is gate 6 I think. Straight in about 400 yards then left through the brush to a dry creek bed. |

It just takes time in the woods to find the pigs, but once you find them it's on!
Make sure to stalk around quietly or you will never even get a glimpse of them... They are definately a challenge and do have Nikes on most of the time. |

I was out last night, actually saw one in the open. Didn't get any shots. The rest of the group was in the weeds. The group still sounds pretty good size. Saw one dead one, half eaten. Going out Wednesday again.

Yeah, with the misty rain today I am sure they were moving. Perfect conditions, damp enough to quiet the leaves, but not so damp that everything turns to mud.
Damm work keeps getting in the way of what is really important. |

Yea, I keep on hoping to meet up with someone. I think it's easier to get at them in the bloodweeds with two people.
