    Aging parents bucket list

We found out a few weeks ago that my mom has leukemia. It’s not great news but it’s also not a super aggressive cancer so it’s nothing to lose our minds about just yet.

But it’s caused me to put some things into perspective. When my step dad(who raised me)passed away, it was quick and left me with many regrets that I didn’t devote enough time to making memories. I don’t want to make that mistake with my mom.

She lives a couple miles up the street. She is 66 and pretty active. I’m 41 and I am making a bucket list of things to do together and I need ideas. So far, I’m taking her and her best friend hunting(her son is also my best friend and we hunt together), we’re going to a Kevin Fowler concert, taking a wine trip, and going to start picking her up on sundays for church and we’re gonna sit down and write a cookbook of her recipes. Any other ideas are appreciated. Whatcha got?

That’s an absolutely fantastic list you have started. Above all else, I would have hugged my folks and thanked them for their unconditional love and support more than I did. I like to think I did a lot of this - but still wish it could have been more. Prayers going up for your mom and your family man.

Favorite vacation destination that shes always wanted to go to, or has been wanting to go back to? Depending on the location it wouldn't necessarily have to cost an arm and a leg, could make a road trip out of it.

Now if she decides she wants to visit Positano that could be a whole different ball game.

Kuddos to you for putting all of this together.

Sit down one day and go through all her old photo albums. My mom talked for hours and hours. Prayers for you both.

I've heard this advertised on the radio a few times. Seems like a pretty cool thing to do.

This for sure---and take notes and names because in another 25 years you won't have to ask "Is that Uncle Billy?"

I would also think about doing a geneology thing---trace the family roots because when Mom n Dad are gone it is a whole lot harder to do.

Nothing is better to her than just quality time sitting together, talking, holding hands, reminiscing your childhood, enjoying a soft gentle breeze, watching the sun go down, listening to the birds, the laughter of children playing and just enjoying being together. Those will be the times you will remember best. Time together doing anything is the best.

I realize this can be a challenging time, however, my uncle at 79 was diagnosed with leukemia and at the age of 80 had a transplant, survived and just announce this past weekend he is cancer free. Oldest transplant recipient at the hospital ever. Keep the faith it can be beaten. I can PM you the name of his doctor. He traveled to Charlotte to a specialist from his home in Florida

If your from Texas then Josh Abbott put a pretty good list together in a song:

                          Climb Enchanted Rock
Drink a cold Shiner down in Luckenbach,
                          Go to the River Walk,
                          Float the 'Ol Frio,
                          Eaten Cooper's in Llano
                          Houston rodeo,
Sing "Carry On" at a Pat Green show,
                          see an Abilene sunset,
Catch a trout down in Port A
                          see fireworks on PK,
have a kolache when you go through West,
Go to the Larry Jo Taylor fest,
                          the Ft. Worth stock show,
                          Sing along with Cory Morrow,
                          see a hill country sunset,
                          hike through Big Bend,
                          the San Antone rodeo,
Sing "Everclear" at a Creager show,
                          see an El Paso sunset,

My add-on : Go see the "Texas" play in Amarillo

My mom just retired. We are going to northern arkansas next month to float for 4 days on the buffalo river, camp, and fish for small mouth. lucky she is in good physical condition as i know our days are numbered.

i really like macguyver's list too (even if he did plagiarize it!).
