Back in June, my brother and I decided we were going to take my dad down the the Devil's River as a Father's Day gift. I've been down the rive before, but neither my brother or dad had made the trip. As time drew nearer, I began to have a little bit of doubt, as I watched YouTube videos of people tumbling out of their vessels as the barreled down 3-Tier Rapid.
After a ton of preparation, involving equipment purchase, lots of communication with Amistad Adventures (they run a top notch organization), we headed to Del Rio on a Thursday night. We met our guides on Friday morning, and after a quick trip to the Del Norte unit, we were off. Our trip lasted 2.5 days, during which we floated 15 river miles. We ended up camping two nights on the river. The low flow conditions worked out to our advantage, as may of the potential hazards were not runnable, essentially taking the decision out of our hands.
We caught a fair number of fish, but nothing big. We could not have ordered better weather, and, as I remembered from our last trip, the scenery was fantastic.
Nobody got hurt, and I managed to return my 63 YO dad in once piece. He had the time of his life, and I was glad my brother and I decided to make it happen.
