I say XD for this reason, safety. The XD has a trigger safety, grip safety, a round position indicator(chamber), and you can tell if it is cocked in the dark by using your thumb to check if the firing pin is in the rearmost position. Too easy to use and very accurate. Glocks are awesome, but their safety mechanism's are not as good, IMO. I bought mine brnad new, with night sights, for $485 at GT distributors in Austin.

Glock. Have had mine for about 5 years now. Thru all weather conditions, hog hunting and everyday carry. To this day it has never jambed or failed to fire. Not even once.

I went through this last summer. I wanted a .40. On the high end, I liked the H&K USP and the SIG P229, but wasn't willing to go that high. On the low end there was the SIG 2022 and Taurus 24/7, but really didnt' like either. I looked in the mid-range at the Glocks and the Beretta PX4 F Storm. I ended up with the PX4F Storm ($500 at BPS on sale at that time) and don't regret it. It had all the features I wanted and my wife liked it better than anything we looked at also (since it was technically for her), so it was a done deal for us.

The sig 226 is a sweet shooter and you can also swap out the barrels and shoot 357 sig 2 guns in one.My cousin is a DPS seargent and this is the same gun the troopers carry they use the 357.I have a 357 barrel ordered for mine

Another vote for Glock. I bought a 23 about 5 years ago and its been a great little gun. Never missfired, jammed, stovepiped, or anything like that. Mine rides in a holster whenever Im at the lease, gets muddy, dusty, bloody and used quite a bit. I once went a whole year without cleaning it at all and it never missed a beat. I did break the front sight off of it once when shooting pigs out of traps. I geuss it hit the cage when the gun cycled. Didnt even notice until I got home and went to clean the gun. 10 bucks and it was fixed. Get a gen3 though, the texture on the gen4 grips is no bueno.($.02)

XD compact.

But, it really depends on what feels right to you. I personably don't like the feel of a Glock. Doesn't mean their not a good gun.

Best advice, go shot some. Pick the one that feels bet to you.

If its for carry, then that changes the criteria. Reliability is very high on my list.

So an xD with a grip safety would have stopped any of those?

Point an xD at your foot with a loaded chamber and pull the trigger and you will get the same result. Stupid doesn't change by name on the side of the slide.

My favorites are the XD 40 and SW 99 and M&P. All great pistols, but what it really boils down to is your max dollar allowance and ultimatley what feels comfortable to you and is the most user friendly. Not sure if Carter Country allows you to shoot some pistols before you buy .I know there are places out there like that and that would be in your neck of the woods. My best advise would just be to try a few out if you can.

I have the ruger SR40. I rally like it. It has all the safety features too. Trigger safety, a flip safety, and a loaded loaded chamber indicator. 500$ and feels really good. Gets better the more I shoot it.

I'll throw one out there that nobody has mentioned. The S&W M&P 40 is a good one, and well priced. I have the compact version, but I can't shoot it worth a lick. The full size version was a tack driver though.

And none of the extra safeties would not have helped either one of morons. The agent thought the gun was unloaded and pulled the trigger.

Not sure which officer shooting a suspect you are talking about but the one I can think of thought it was the taser and not his pistol.

My biggest complaint about the XD is the grip safety has to be enaged to pull the slide back. JMB got it right on the 1911.
