Default has anyone ever caught a deer in a hog trap?

i was curious to know if anyone has ever caught a deer in a hog trap in the off season. i had a buddie happen to him on one of my traps and the doe that was trapped in there trampled and thrashed around the cage to where she had broke her jaw and ripped most of her hind quarter hide off. He had called me asking what to do and i told him best thing to do is call a game warden. Was that the best adivce?

now taking the top off the trap, would that be good still for big pigs? i just dont want them pigs climbin out lol. so far from what i know the game warden told him to take it. but for future references i think im going to cut the tops off them off or maybe make one thats taller and cut the top off that one.

I almost got trampled by a doe in a trap when I was in HS... It got pretty ugly. When you cut the top out leave about 8" of the panel around the top to keep the hogs from climbing out.

You can do this or put up several pieces of barbed wire across the door to keep the deer out. Chances are the door is too big allowing the deer to get trapped.

Once caught a button buck in a close top hog trap. He was pretty banged up from thrashing around in there but we got him released and I'm sure he made it. Blaze is right. Cut the top out to completely prevent this from happening.

Best thing I have found to keep deer out of hog traps is to place a pc of tarp across the upper part of the door. Deer won't bend down to go under the tarp where hogs will.

Seen it happen a couple times, one of the ranches I hunted had a whitetail and fallow doe get in one of their hog traps and a family emergency came up which caused the deer to be in there 3 days and died.

We put a piece of wood or a small log about halfway down over the opening horizontally, the hogs can get in, but it is harder for the deer to get in, we still caught and released a doe last year though. She was tired, but ok.

Deer is fairly easy to get out of the trap. DO NOT GO INTO THE TRAP WITH A GROWN TURKEY NO MATTER HOW SAFE YOU UNCLE SAYS IT IS HE WILL KICK YOUR A@s@s

DONT ASK HOW I KNOW BUT THERE WAS NOT ROOM FOR BOTH OF US IN THE TRAP.

GW in our area says that the deer often tear the connective tissues in their mouth that allow them to forage when banging into the panels. Thus, even though they may appear OK when you releasse them, they may die a slow death. I NEVER trap with corn, dieseled or not. Soured wheat works great and I have NEVER caught a deer while using it.

I would NOT have posted it on the internet and I would have let him deal with it...

Personally I would have called the GW after I Let her go telling the GW that I saw doe that was pretty messed up... I can NOT shoot a deer outside of season AND I WILL NOT have a doe in a trap when the GW shows up! Im not going to jail for a doe!

But now seems like GW has to get involved,

Disagree strongly, just with the premise though... There cannot be a law for everything... seems our country is headed this way and its wrong IMO!

We personally have short traps that deer dont go in because they are too short, not saying they cant but they dont.

However, Making things illegal, or adding stipulations or requirements of size is not the answer.... Too much legislation in outdoor primitive living as it is! Hard for a guy to get back to nature with all the government interference is what I am trying to say.

I've seen two hogs trapped and moved to a cattle trailer for transport. The cattle trailer was piped (but not solid) topped. Before the hogs got off the property one had climbed up the sides and bailed out the top. The other was well on his way. Saw it with my own eyes.

Hogs can climb material that's conducive to their weight if left with no other option. Deer are just casualties of war in my opinion. In 19 years of trapping I've caught only 1 doe, and she stood long enough for me to get the door open.

I like those odds, so I'll stick to the closed traps.

im gonna have to get my traps back from my buddies then ands cut them tops off. i made one trap that is a big round pen with hog panelling around a feeder and the hogs push the panel to get in and cant get back out. The deer can easily jump in or out.

Seems to me this happens more than people think. Just because you got the deer out somewhat safely how do you know what happen after releasing it? Saying that it was ok and lived is a stretch unless you have proof ie. a pic or something to verify this... I wouldn't be so quick to say that the deer made it.

All the tops should be off the traps thats the only way to insure they don't get caught.

I also disagree .. I have caught deer and sometimes its not pretty but it happens. I do however catch a crap load more of hogs then I will ever of deer. Had a few die as well and they eat just fine with permission from game warden. The guy who says he almost got a ticket or got a ticket for it is full of it..I have had hogs jump out of 6' panels and those are truly money hogs so no tops for me unless its a box trap and I just started building them taller and tying twine across the door

Agreed and seen it a few deer compared to the damage the hogs do is a small but unpreventible loss.

Use circle traps instead of box traps. They catch alot more hogs at one time, and deer can jump out. Hogs don't usually get out of these.

i had a bad situation with a deer in a trap but i guess it is part of trapping...any new ones i build have open tops and we dont use the closed one as much

i used to have pics of an eight point that would crawl in a trap on his knees....then back out the way he came in...it was crazy to watch

Not to steal your thread but I have a question. Not to long ago there was a thread about how long before you check traps if you have water and food available. I have caught a deer in a trap WITH a open top and was using DIESEL soured corn. Now my question is..
If you have water and food in a trap and you only check it every 2-4 days what if you did catch a deer in your trap and you could have saved it by letting it out the day it was caught instead of checking it a couple days later? Deer will go nuts in a trap and I promise you they will not just set still and eat and drink until you get there to check your traps.
Personally I think that the people who dont check there traps every day and catch a deer or a calf and the animal dies should lose there rights to set traps. This is just my opinion. Anything could happen even when we take measures to prevent accidents from happening so we all need to be responsible.

Agreed. If you aren't able to check it every day, it should be either wired open or someone who can make it out to check it should be designated to do so to prevent this from happening. It sucks to see animals suffer when it should've been avoided.
