After three years of saying I was going to hunt one, I finally did it. Had a great hunt last weekend at the Double L Ranch and after 3 days of hunting, it finally happened Sunday morning. A large group of bucks had been hanging out in the same location every morning. I hunted the area both Friday and Saturday mornings but all of the shooters were feeding out in a corner that the wind wouldnt allow me to hunt. Sunday morning we woke up to a Northwest wind and cooler temps. I finally got to hunt the stand I had been wanting to and it all worked out. 21 yard shot and he pretty much went down in sight. Happy is an understatment.

Two things suprised me about the axis deer on this hunt. One is, they are very wary. The only animal I have ever hunted that you want more than one around you. When they are by themselves, they are always looking around, acting really jittery.

The other thing is they are fast. This guy managed to duck a little at 21 yards shooting 319 fps but in the 6-7 seconds he lived after the arrow hit him, he traveled about 150 yards. They can really move.

He was broadside but tried to spin some at the shot and yes it was a Rage.
