Im on a lease in east tx for the first time this year. Im in Polk cty. From what I have heard its typically in the later part of November. Most of the guys on our lease and neighboring properties said the rut last year was hardly evident. They tend to blame the hurricane. Said there wasnt much of a second or later rut to be noted either. Dont know if this helps or just screws it up worse for you. I just figured Id pass along the hear say Ive recaived.

IMO...Rut is too hard to define in East Texas because there are waaay too many does. There is a great number of hunters in ETX that don't believe in taking a doe...and now the US Forest Service will not let you take one either.

Until the buck-doe ratio gets in balance, the rut is up in the air.

Now having said that..I hunt in Shelby Co and saw rutting activity during the last week of October and first week of November

I agree, I typically see the rut occur from late October through 2nd week of november. Especially closer to the coast.

I'm in Hopkins county and we seem to have a looooong rut that isn't well defined. Last year, I saw two bucks making rubs in the middle of October and we got several trail camera pictures of a spotted fawn back in August.

I grew up hunting in eastern Wood county and we typically start seeing rubs around the 2nd week of October. By the 3rd week of Oct, good numbers of rubs and a few scrapes. The last week of Oct and into the first two weeks of Nov has historically been when we've seen the most hard core chasing.

If we're lucky, we may see some secondary activity around Thanksgiving. Once Dec rolls around and I suspect most NE TX hunters will agree, it gets pretty darn tough.

Exactly! I'm right on the border of what most call "East Texas". Some pine trees but not tons. LimeStone County.
If I had to pin point it to a few weeks I'd say last 3 weeks of November is when we see the most rutting action. BUT I've seen bucks chasing as early as opening weekend of bow season and as late as Christmas. Usually young un's chasing that early or that late around here.

this is about the closest anyone on her has gotten for very deep se tex. its why i started bowhunting, mid october through about mid novemeber at the latest... both from what ive seen and the reports i get from the local game wardens, in deep se tex, hardin, jefferson, polk, tyler, chambers, jasper, newton, orange. counties... im sure theres other but these i am the most familiar with.... its most easily evidenced by the number of road kill deer in these areas during that time

I cannot speak about the rut but on my place in Smith County we saw new born fawns last week end of May last year, this year it was mid June. That put breeding late October to mid November.

I live in Van Zandt Co. and generally see prerut activity in late October and chasing in early to mid november. when I hunted in Van Zandt,( up until 2 years ago when the owner sold and broke my heart), I would take vacation days from the 6th-12th every year.

I would say it is not as pronounced as some other areas, but last year, an increased level rut-type activity the last week of October and through the first two weeks of November.

Here is a good example of 2 fawns born at very different times, I think the back one was just born still weak on the feet. I have already seen 5 rubs, I really believe where I hunt October is the time, I saw every decent buck in Oct, then only once in November. Because of resize u cant see but the spots are all over the back one and the front has since lost hers.

depends on your place, I have a place in Angelina county and a place in cherokee county that are only about 15 miles apart. The angelina county place sees most of its rutting activity the last week of Oct and first week of Nov. The Cherokee county place dosent pick up until about Thanksgiving.

Default rut in east texas

I have seen the rut change over the last 30 years on our lease in Polk Co. In the early 80"s the rut would kick off in late October and be done by the first week of November. This is why I started bow hunting and would schedule my vacation for the last week of October.

Jump forward to 2009 and our best rutting action is the second week in November. I still hunt in late October but the rut has not started yet.

I believe better management practices have contributed mostly to the change.

I agree with El Vaquero. When I used to hunt in Harrison County, they were making scrapes in the first week of Oct. Because of the thickness in vegetation, I never really saw them chasing, but the rut is definitely around the middle of October.

Saw the most bucks last year on the last day of bow season, and saw them chasing the whole first week of Nov. After that I saw 2 deer while hunting the rest of Nov. and Dec.

Took GF hunting thanksgiving to shoot a few more does, and she shot a nice 9pt. chasing does in a field. Next day took BIL to same field and seen near 30 deer and every buck was fighting, and would chase does a short distance.

Hope that helps

(This was in Wood Co.)

i'm no biologist, but i can say for sure that the rut in east texas varies a lot. look at when fawns start hitting the ground. i see it in early may all the way up into late july. mid-october to late december its possible any time. you will have some "hot" days no doubt. how much rutting activity you see depends on your deer density, buck/doe ratio. best thing to do is from mid-october until the season is over, hunt as much as you can.

With all this rain that we have been receiving, is it going to make rut come earlier? I have heard that it is suppose to be earlier, so I am hoping to get out a couple of times from the first of November to about the 12th. I haven't seen much aggressive movement and I'm anticipating them to get going in a week.

October 1st through Thanksgiving. Yes, it can last that long. There is no one week rush on rutting activity around here, although the peak will be between now and Nov 14th (just personal opinion).

I've seen bucks chasing as early as Oct 6th, and ans late as the day after Thanksgiving so it may not pay off to plan your hunting activities around the East Texas Rut.

With that being said, I saw bucks in Wood county chasing this week and plan to take a day off to chase them Friday, but that's more to get a few extra days in the woods before the rifle hunters take over than trying to time the rut.

well boys we hunt in henderson county...athens area and we have been seeing pre rut going on up until the past week or two...all the bucks are broken up and checking scrapes. sunday night we went out to shoot some pigs with a light and came up on a mature buck...he stood about 65 yards from us and never moved....turned out their was a doe laying in the grass and she stood up and any move she made he did the same...so with this being said we have typically seen the rut activity starting to get better now but gets real good at the first of november.
