    Cooking elk?

Tried this last night in the recipes forum, but no luck. Figure I'll try again here.

My mom and stepdad brought back some elk meat from his nephew in Wyoming. I've never eaten or cooked elk, so I don't know where to start or what to expect. I have some tbones, a couple roasts, fajita meat, and 1# of hamburger. Do I season and cook it like beef? Venison? Thank you in advance!

I was going to say the same thing. It is some of the best tasting game out there.

Thank y'all! So I should leave it fairly rare, like venison?

Don't over cook it. It's best served rare to rare plus. I've done everything from slow cooking a roast to half and half burgers, to chili, and bacon wrapped medallions. Elk is my favorite meat out there, just sucks that I'm terrible at hunting them

Medium at most. If you tenderize it a little bit you can get it to medium with no issues.

It's a read meat so cook it the same way you would any kind of red meat. If you like your beef rare the do the same with the elk. Imo it's the best tasting venison there is.

I'll trade you some young backstrap for some elk if you'd like. Always wanted to try elk

Elk is about 10x better than venison. Its not even close.

                            Failsafe...

                            Crockpot:
                            Meat
                            Beer
                            Water
                            Garlic (sliced/diced/minced/powder)
                            Onion(sliced/diced/minced/powder)
                            Salt
                            Pepper

Instructions: Add all ingredients. Turn on low. Go to work. Come home. Turn off. Enjoy over bed of noodles/rice/bread/potatoes

I like it battered and fried, grilled, or in the crockpot like Briar Friar says. I love elk roast. Leftover roast and scrambled eggs on a tortilla with some pico de gallo is some good grindin.
