are you going to let them roam or keep them penned up?
IMO white leghorns if allowed to roam and Rhode Island reds if they are staying mostly penned up.

Rhode Island red or a cross Red Sexlink. Ton of brown eggs. We also have Leghorns but not as many eggs...

New Hampshire Reds. They mature a little faster and are good layers.

I've got buffs and they have yet to quit laying due to the weather.

We've got a Buff Orpington which lays VERY LARGE brown eggs, a Gold Laced Wyandotte which lays large brown eggs, and an "Ameraucana" (actually an Easter Egger, but Privett hatchery lists them as Ameraucanas) which lays large mint green eggs. All three have layed consistently throughout the winter. While none of these breeds are top producers, they yield high quality eggs at an average of 2 eggs per day (for all three hens). Also, not sure if this matters to you, but all three birds are very sweet and like being touched and hand fed by my kids.
