We have an FJ Cruiser as a play/ weekend ride. I always thought it would be cool to have a matching camp trailer to pull behind it. Maybe someday...

Great idea, but if it's going to be a true off road camper, you might want/need to put a bigger axle on it with spindles that can mount larger tires. I'd enjoy following this build.

It will not see anything crazy. The axle is a 3500lb setup. The trailer should way around 1k maybe a little more.

To get some more ideas on your build and generate some interest among their members in what you are building, you should sign up as a member of expedition portal. A lot of folks out there really into boondocking and exploring with small and off road capable campers and trailers.
