    Age and Mgt Opinion

I videoed these two 8's at my lease in Lavaca Co.

The Young 8 will get a pass, just curious as to what the GS thinks of the age?

The second is what I'm thinking might need to die as a Management deer. He's no baby with a good frame and mass but has these very small crab claws.

What say the GS on age and opinion of Ole Crabby being a mgt deer?

I'm not a Lavaca County specialist so i don't want to guess an age but i would say the 2nd deer is defiantly to young to be a Cull in any situation. The first looks to be a 3.5y/o but in STX we would still let him walk.

I think the first one buck is probably about 2.5yo and the second doesn't look all that old either but its hard to tell from that limited view of his body. I would guess 3.5 on him, good mass, maybe he'll turn into something special next year.

What part of Lavaca are you in?

I'm just west of Hallettsville on a small ranch.

Thanks for the input, it's hard to tell but I think both of these deer are 3.5 and need a pass.

I'm just having a hard time with those ugly little crab claws, seems likely he'll be a bigger version of this next year.

I would give him one more year for sure. You should be able to identify him next year assuming he grows crab claws like that next year.

                That's a very good point.

I'm torn between that and telling my dad to shoot him. He started bow hunting a few years ago but has only really become serious about it this year.

Never too late to start something.

Both deer have a chance to be something. First deer looks 2.5. The second deer is 3 to 4yrs old. Keep Looking. Alot of deer have yet to show them selfs and with the acorns at home this yr you just never know what can show it. Good Luck on what ever you decide

Another good point, I've seen some progression pictures of deer that looked like junk and blew up at year 5. One of the reasons that I don't kill 1.5 y/o spikes.

Here's a couple of picks to compare. The first is a stud of a youngin and the second looks like he needs some help. This is my second year on the place and I've seen some good ones including the a 5y/o 133 that I killed last year.

Read the post, the only deer that I've even thought about shooting was the Crab Clawed 8.

The other 8 I was simply curious about since he has some really good potiental for the area and the last two pictures were to simply show some a really good looking young deer and a not so good looking deer.

In my opinion I would give the crab clawed buck another year at least. Unless you have a history with him and know for a fact that he is a 5 yo.
