Me and my wife just booked our first cruise for next fall. My question is, Is the drink package worth it? How much is beer if purchased on the boat? $630 total for 4 days for both of us. I feel like we will get our moneys worth but want to hear everyones opinion. We are going through Royal Carribean

Alcohol is expensive on a cruise ship. I think that is where they make most of their money. I am not a big drinker, so I couldn't justify spending that much money on drinks. When we went we spend a couple hundred over 5 days, but again one or two cocktails per day is all we had.

My wife and I purchased one for me on our last cruise before hand because we knew it would be worth it. However she doesn't drink much, so we held out on the drink package for her. By the end of day 1 we purchased the package at a higher rate and we still came out cheaper.
The other nice thing is if you want to try new drinks you can. If you don't like something just order a new drink and you don't have to worry about the extra cost. |

if you plan on really drinking then it would probably be worth it
we considered it for our last cruise and didn't get it, but we snuck a ton of booze on board with us. Still spent around $300~ on alcohol past that with dinner drinks and beers Next time, we will probably buy the package just to get rid of the hassle of going from the room and back to get a refill. |

Depends on how much you drink really. My wife doesn't drink a lot so the few that she has a day comes out cheaper than the package. I prepurchased a bottle to have waiting in the stateroom and drank on that and few drinks mixed in here in there from the bar. Our total to get off for everything was cheaper than just the package itself. I know on Carnival it doesn't start til day 2 at sea so the first day you are buying drinks anyway.

If you split evenly, $315 per person. At $8 per beer, you would need to drink 10 per day or 40 total for the 4 days to break even. I'm sure mixed drinks are a little more expensive so you wouldn't need to drink as many to break even.

Empty water bottles and put vodka or some clear liquor. Buy the soft drink package and problem solved. Or empy a wine bottle and put dark liquor in it and take 2 bottles. We never bought it on carnival because they require both individuals to buy it or none at all. So my wife hardly drinks so not worth it to us.

I did not get the drink package, easiest to smuggle booze in at your first stop.
They will find vodka in water bottles when you board. |

Cruises stink. Unless you like standing in line, crowded, noisy poolside chairs that you can’t get unless you get up at 4am, being told where to be and when, buffet style food, and lots of old people. But that’s just my opinion. Go where you want and stay there. You’ll be happier

Royal Carribean is good. we just did one this summer. As soon as you walk on the ship hit the bar. Take a big Yeti cup with a lid, then order 2 drinks at the bar of the same thing and fill your yeti with them. Also they will kick you out of the pools if you have an open ended cup like a solo cup. But if you have a Yeti with a lid, you are golden. We book our trip through a booking agent and he got us our drink package complimentary. All in all, Royal package is good deal. Carnival package not a good deal.

Going in December and have been going back and forth on this for weeks now. I think I'm gonna skip the alcohol package and try my luck sneaking a bottle on board. We will have the kids so wont be much drinking anyway.

Well lets just put it like this.
We went on a Norwegian cruise to Alaska. I think the package was $199 or $299 per person. I cant remember. Me and my dad where wondering how long it would take to cover the package. Well be covered it the first night. In Seattle port you still have to pay a 10% tax on the liquor not covered by the package. When i got back to the room that night my tax bill was already around $32 and my dad said his showed to be $34. On the Norwegian cruises you have a running tab that you can see on your TV screen. on a certain channel. Not sure if other cruises are the same. We just got on the boat and were bored so we all started drinking and the rest is histroy. Like said above we ordered all kinds of different drink just to try them by day 2-3 we where trying all kinds of crap. There was about 10 of us in our group. Some more than paid for theirs and others may not have but i feel like as a whole we came out on top. |

Think about it, that’s only $80 per day per person.
I’ve spent that in a couple hours at a sporting event. Drink prices there are fairly inline with cruise lines. |

Worth it. Note when I did it through Carnival Cruise Lines, they said it was unlimited drinks, but it wasn't. They will cut you off at a pre determined # of drinks per day

A friend just went , and out the 3 couples , two lost all they had tried to sneak on, as all luggage is checked before it gets taken to your room... its nothing new to them people smuggling or trying to smuggle liquor on... good luck and enjoy... this is why I do all inclusive resorts... 5 day drunk , and don't worry man.

on ebay, they sell fake shampoo bottles to sneak on liquor. Fake binoculars, even have fake tampons that you can fill with liquor and keep in the wife's purse. Then she only has to make a trip to the bathroom to mix a drink instead of going back to the cabin.
Do a Amazon or ebay search for "Cruise ship Flask". https://www.ebay.com/itm/Double-Side...oAAOSwwJVdqAOJ Last edited by hound dog; 11-06-2019 at 01:01 PM. Reason: add content |

I bought a bunch on sunscreen flasks at amazon and used to refill at each stop since the drinks on the ship usually aren't strong enough.

Have resisted my wife's pleading to go cruise for 22 years but now we set sail tomorrow. To make it worse, my entire extended family is going. We will carry on 2 bottles of wine for tomorrow evening then Friday our drink package kicks in but I just found out they will limit us to 15 per day each.

Sorry a couple of you have had bad experiences on cruises. My wife and I went on a 7 day Alaskan back in 2013 and had a fantastic time. I’m definitely not a people person and I still loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat.
That being said we went on Princess and everything was top notch. I don’t imagine I would enjoy a Caribbean cruise on Carnival nearly as much. We also didn’t buy any drink packages, including soft drinks. We had no issue drinking coffee, tea, juice and water. We bought a few drinks and soft drinks here and there and probably spent $100 or less on drinks. But we don’t have to drink to have a good time either. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

RUM RUNNERS!!!!
https://www.rumrunnerflasks.com/ Never been caught. You can bring a 12 pk coke and an empty 30 oz yeti. I sneak Jack Daniels on board, mix with a 12 pack of coke in my yeti and pay the room stawrd $5 a day to keep quiet and keep the ice bucket full. Never had an issue. |

Done this several times. You can get a cork out of a wine bottle without a cork screw so it will leave no marks. Or, you can do what I did on a few cruises. Just buy a package of new corks on Amazon and a package of the seals. Easy to find since there are many home wine making kits. Just buy 2 bottles of the cheapest wine, dump it down the drain. Then pick your alcohol. I used to get white wine and a light tequila would match the color very close. 2 bottles of tequila worked well for me and you can bring your own soft drinks for mixing. They even have cups and allow you to make a mixed drink in plain sight and no one will know. I used to mix my drinks right at the pool, all from the same cup. here is the link: https://www.amazon.com/Smuggle-Mug-1.../dp/B0117YF5R0 |

I've been on 1 cruise, it was a 7 day'er and I think I was drunk most of the time. Wife (girlfriend at the time) & I rang up a $1500 tab in that week on drinks.
I'd buy it. |

Went on a cruise last October and we got the drink package for me and soft drink package for my wife. I would just go order a shot and a beer and bring her the shot and she'd mix a drink. We did this the entire cruise and never had a problem and spent half of what we would have if we both got the package.

If both of you drink your max 10 drinks a day its worth it since most of the drinks are $10-$13. You can get anything with a max value of $20 per drink. In other words depends on what you drink. We usually get it and choose top self Whiskies.....

Worth it in my opinion. We didn’t do the drink package and had an alcohol bill of nearly $900. That didn’t sting so bad since the wife won about 1/2 of that on the slot machines.
