2019 Hagerman Seg. B

Time to start a thread for Seg. B. I'll be hunting with my son; I think it will be my 5th time to hunt at Hagerman, and will be his first. Long range weather forecast looks good, and we are excited!

Congrats to all the successful Seg. A hunters - we are hoping they left a few deer for the Seg. B folks!

Good luck segment B hunters. I’ll chime in about my screw up, my big mistakes, and my hunt from A on another thread. I got lazy and it cost me two of the biggest bucks I’ve ever seen in the wild. I know one is still alive, it will put you on a cover of a magazine. :-)

Plan on hitting a few spots at the h Sat. and Sun. Maybe the busards will give the lost bucks up. Wont be as nice as finding them in person but I bet would beat having lost them. Keep the faith.

If you find any don't try to bring them out. They are now considered the same as sheds and cannot be removed from the refuge. That's how it used to be anyway. Take pictures and give the coordinates to the staff and maybe they would at least put the rack in the headquarters.

I plan on scouting Sunday and maybe once more next Wednesday. Good luck to all!

Yes sir I did know.not to take them out but would think they would allow the hunter to have their trophy. Then again I guess a rule.is still a rule no matter how much it would blow.

Few things I learned from being first timer in Seg A.

• Have a better plan for different wind directions. We had South on Fri/Sun and North on Sat. I should of moved Sun and it cost me a chance at a good buck
• Hunting 4 miles from the gate sure was tough on my body
• Grab your License plate # before orientation, you will need to write it down. PS- May want to bring your own pen, 75% of their pens were out of ink, LOL
• There is never a good time to eat your lunch. I missed my opportunity at a doe when I had my lunch bag in my lap with a doe 20 yards behind me, I thought I would be safe with a 1230p lunch, not!
• I would highly recommend not going back to work until Tuesday, you will need Monday to rest up and possibly remove your stand if you didn't get it on Sunday Night.
• Last but no least, help each other out, you will meet some good people in your segment. Enjoy your time out there and make the most of it.

Great points! I've hunted 3 times and this is the first year that I'm going to get my stand on Monday. Carrying it out Sunday evening sucks!

I scouted this afternoon and only saw some hogs. Going back Saturday to hopefully find my tree.

The weather looks perfect if it will stay that way.

For any of you new guys, checklist below.

When it's over, if you ain't tired, you missed the chance. Some guys will add more, but this gets to the point. I consider it a privilege to hunt the "H".

Make sure you have your permit, duh.

Parking permit on the dash of vehicle, tarp in back if wifes car.

Game cart, there is usually some at HQ to borrow.

Make sure you have your archery endorsement on your license. Goes without saying, make sure you have your license.

Make sure you have your BH Ed card, last I knew, the number on your license is not valid, they want to see the card.

For Thursday check-in, have your vehicle info to include license information.

During the inbriefing, listen to Mr. Balkenbush and ask any questions you might have.

While waiting for 0900 to go hang a stand on Thursday, get to know your hunting neighbors and find out where they are going, and let them know what your plans are.

Wear your climbing harness, a fall from a stand ruins your hunt, as well as whomever has to haul your butt out.

In my 4 hunts, I've ran into one a-hole, the others are 100% decent, don't be that 1.

Search TBH for past threads, those can give you more than I can in this one post.

Monday was the deadline for recovering a shot animal. you cant pick anything up if you find it now

Yes I am aware of the rules. Just hate to see a hunters trophy waste away in the wood. Not to mention the loss the buck took. If found the refuge could pick it up if they are told where it was seen. I plan hunting hard and hoping to get a shot at an H monster. Well gonna focus on B, A was a great one for the book. We will see how B plays out, the weather is shaping up nicely. Can’t believe they did away with the hog golden ticket. No incentive to shoot hogs equals a larger population and more competition for the deer which will decrease the health of the herd. So stupid imo

When it was an in-house hunt, I think they could have the rules whichever they want, ie doe/pig "golden ticket." But since moving the draw to TPW, they are having to go by those guidelines.. and those guidelines would absolutely NEVER allow someone to have a free pass to hunt there.. say over the 3 segments, 20 hunters got a "golden ticket," that's 20 free hunters, 20x$3entry.. THATS 60 BUCKS!!! We all know they cant afford to lose that much..

What I was told is that it was too difficult to keep up with due to the very low number of hog tickets.

And someone correct me if I'm wrong (never have got a golden ticket), you still had to pay the next years entry fees, it was just an automatic draw.

In my opinion killing 2 hogs in a 3 day hunt is about the same level of difficulty as harvesting a doe

Correct. In 2015, they made you bring the hogs out so I didn't bother shooting any. Then a couple years later, they let you take a picture with your permit again like they had before. Without a golden ticket for hogs, it's not worth losing 2 arrows for and definitely not if you have to hike them all the way out.

And the hunt is still going to be managed by the Refuge after this year. TPWD is only facilitating the draw. And that doesn't start until 2020.

Forgive my ignorance.....but what is the "golden ticket"? I saw it referred to several times in Segment A.

An automatic draw for next year's hunt if you shoot a doe clean through the lungs/heart. You can't get one in back to back years though.

One lethal shot to a doe in the heart, lung or liver and you get a ticket into next year's drawing.

Found my spot yesterday. Saw a WIDE buck at Harris Creek right around the corner from the Visitor Center. At least 24" wide. Just chilling by the road.
