Shot another stag today. Only 1 buck tag left, so will have to be choosy for remainder of season.

Saw a bunch of young 8pts, but nothing I would shoot. Tons of skinny does as well. No sign of rut from what I could tell.

Yesterday morning in Harper, the feeder went off. Does came in...about a minute later they are looking up into the cedars. Two spikes come scent checking and chased the does in a circle. Then a bigger buck came out, a 7 pt. He chases off the spikes, comes back to the feeder and I shot him. They are chasing, the cold weather is helping.

Knocked down my biggest buck off this San Saba Co. Lease. We've hunted it for 5 or 6 yrs and it has always had lots of deer just not many bigger deer.

Had pics of him all Aug and Sept. Then he disappeared, at least coming to corn he disappeared.
This weekend was sloooow as far as deer coming to corn. Lots of new green growth and tons of acorns on the ground.
I was sitting in my ground blind playing on my phone because i hadn't seen but 3 deer in 3 previous sits, i look up and he is crossing my opening. As soon as i laid eyes on him i knew what deer it was. He went behind a bigger tree and i move my gun/tripod and give him a couple "mehs" when he came out the other side of the tree and dumped him with my new Alamo Precision TBH special 6mm creedmoor.

We had a really good opening weekend. My cousin took his best Hill Country buck. The rest of us hunted a really big framed 8. Several more shooters on camera that we hope to get on before season ends. Bberend05 will be alone shortly with pictures

The last several weeks we've had loads of axis and whitetail at all our feeders. Friday night and yesterday it hailed acorns. Feeders were like ghost towns all weekend.

Zach (my son) was after a big axis. We heard one bellowing about a half mile away yesterday evening, so we stalked toward him. We got to within 100 yards of the herd, but they were in a thick patch of oaks (dang acorns). No livestock on our lease, so there's lots of underbrush. Saw the buck, but it was too thick to get a shot. We tried to move to get a better angle, but no dice. They finally saw us and slipped out down the hill. Fun stalk, but no shot.

Whitetail bucks are bird dogging all over hoping for hot does, but none of the does are having it yet.

I did not see any sign that the rut is on at our place. They are getting frisky though. Saw a couple of middle age bucks cruising but no big boys yet. The does were not acting crazy either. I did see two fawns nursing Saturday morning, which I thought was odd for it being so late in the year. But we did get to see a lot of deer.

The buck activity on our place on camera has been extremely slow ever since Thursday. I'm hoping this cool front will help kick the rut off with the full moon approaching.

I hunted my land this morning in Harper even though the solunar table said it would be a bad day for critter movement. It was raining also, but i sit in a box blind. Can't shoot em on the couch. Had a good buck come in the dark under the hog light and hang around long enough to legal shooting time. A nice wide 6 pt. Dropped him where he stood. Pics wont post.

My oldest shot her first deer this morning. Fun hunt sitting at a water trough and some hand corn. Saw 10 bucks and got to see a fight, and a 6 year old 8 point give an awesome snort wheeze to some younger bucks. She had a 5 year old 8 on the corn at first light but she couldnít get steady on him. Then she decided she wanted to shoot a doe, then this little guy came out and she changed her mind haha. She shot him with the same .222 I used on my first deer that I harvested about 400 yards away. I couldnít tell on the shot where she hit him but the buck slowly walked into the brush which I didnít think was a good sign. We gave him an hour wait and I went down to look for sign. No blood. Thankful I followed the trail and found him piled up at 50 yards. I kept quiet and got her and videod her finding him. It was pretty awesome! She ended up making a perfect shot, destroying one lung and nicking the heart. She was pumped and is ready for the next one!

Man that’s crazy! You must be overrun with sheep.

This is my last sit until Thanksgiving. Feeder activity has been slow since most of the mature bucks are locked down with does. I saw my target buck yesterday chasing, so maybe in a few weeks he’ll be back on corn. I love hunting mature bucks with my bow, but man it can get frustrating at times.

After this storm y'all better get on stand. I took 2 bucks of my property in Harper and am satisfied with the bucks i took considering the competition that surrounds me.
I am sitting now in SA airport headed up to my NY deer camp for the gun opener there Saturday. No feeders, no bait, no half hour before sunrise shooting. Whole different ballgame up there.
Good luck y'all hunt safe.

That would be nice if it were true...Where we hunt in NY has antler restrictions of 3 on one side and they have to be minimum of an inch long. Doe tags every 3 years. Like I said. It is hard hunting, no baiting, no feeders, no motion detector lights, no shooting a half hour before sunrise and a half hour after sunset and super cold here now. 19 degrees now in Sullivan county NY wildlife mgt unit 3H.
What a hairy ride this morning on I 10 from Kerrville to San Antonio. We spun out a few times and saw multiple accidents all over west bound 10 on our way. But we made it! Not without airport delays...But we made it.

Here is the buck I shot off my place in Harper. A deep forked 6 point with a huge body.

I also passed on a few small free range Axis bucks Monday morning in Kerrville. I have meat, I am looking for horns. I do not have a 30" plus free range Axis. One day.
These two got a pass.
Good luck boys and hunt safe!

I'm glad yall are having some success! It's been tough at our place, only one lease member has shot a buck so far. I probably wont be back down there until December due to my work schedule.

My cameras have barely anything on them the past 2 weeks. Sat in another stand not on a feeder and saw a nice 9 point trotting through the field. No time for a shot.

Is it worth it to sit over the feeder this time of year?

Our feeders were ghost towns for a couple days after the acorns dropped, but they've been busy again the last few days. Lots of axis again. Whitetail does are back, and there's been several bucks on cameras cruising through checking for hot does. I don't think the does are there yet, but the bucks are out all day and night the last few days cruising. They're not camping out at the feeders, but we're seeing them go by. For every picture you get of a buck at the feeder, there's probably 10 more instances where the buck came by downwind of the feeder to check, but didn't show up on the camera.

I had been bow hunting hard but couldnít seem to close the deal. The one morning that itís super cold I decided to be a wimp and sit in a rifle stand with a heater. Of course a good mature buck comes out and eats my hand corn from the night before when I was bow hunting. Saw several deer that were much bigger than this one but just not as old. Bucks have been chasing like crazy the last few days.

Most buck moment today San Saba and McCulloch than I’ve seen in years. All of them chasing does hard. One doe had 4 bucks running her at the same time. Hopefully they’re still moving like this when I get to the ranch.
