Sore finger is great, and there are usually hogs there, but it's a long, long walk. To get to where the hogs are on the peninsula on sore finger it's around 2.5 miles. That being said, when the hogs get pressured in some of the areas like Willis Creek, that's where they go because there's not a lot of foot traffic back through there. Also, it's a long drag out if you get one. If you've got a boat it's a lot easier to access.

Default Rainy Thursday update.

I hit a doe this evening in C on the east side of the gravel pile. I stuck her at 34 yards a little forward and high. As she tried to duck the arrow it either hit the upper leg bone or shoulder blade and went in 5 inches.

She threw the 2 blade rage as she spun and headed for the trees. I gave her 30 minutes and then looked a little bit into the woods. The opposite side of the woods is area B and they had a stand up in the area somewhere so I call off my search.

If I shoot another in the morning I'll try to find both. Not too happy right now.

Here's a picture of my arrow. The tip blade was bent.

Also a picture of a 5.5 year old buck that was take yesterday in A. Nice rack.

Bulletman.. Sorry to hear about the lost deer. Thats a pretty nice buck though.. If it was killed in comp. A than it was pretty close to us. I never caught that one on camera though. Ive been seeing a lot of 8s and 9s similar to that one that need to be taken. Ill be out there tomorrow if you need any help tracking. I'd be glad to lend a hand.

Here are some hogs we killed this morning behind the dam. That makes 4 this week. They are in the buckets so they wont bleed all over the back of the pickup. Good eatin size!!

I'll be parked at the overlook on the dam. King Ranch with TBH sticker in the window. Old fat gray bearded guy waddling around in the grass!

The best place in C is right there off the high side or both sides of the huge gravel pile. It's kinda grown up around it over the years but it's a buck magnet.

I busted two nice buck last night looking for the doe. I'm heading out there right now.

Hunts over at 11am.

After that I'll talk to Johnny and see it he wants to go down and find the doe, weight and log it in the harvest record.

Come on over. Terry or Mr Bonner might be there also.

Mister Bubba's Bulletman, I noticed you were able to hunt two different areas, I thought they assigned you to one area for the entire hunt? I was drawn for the November 9th session and curious on what area I may be hunting. I put in by myself, any idea?

What areas did they hunt while you were there?

There were 7 open positions. They approved a unit change since the unit was unhunted and nobody else wanted to go.

Wouldn't happen on a full hunt that's fur sure.

No Sir. Coyotes got it I'm sure.

I think the total was 2 doe, a 62lbs and one smaller, both taken in unit D and the buck taken in unit A pictured above.

I sure wish I knew which area I was going to be in. Can you tell me what areas were hunted, and about how many hunters per area?

I put in by myself, so I'm a group of one. Would love to hunt A, B, or C.

You'll be in A B C D or E. Your unit is decided by TPWD's computer program draw order.

Since you're by yourself you might end up in A with another single or E. I'm just guessing.

Call the hunter check station and leave a message for Johnny or Trey, maybe they have the order sheet by now and will tell you.

Remember that there can be cancellations up until the day of the hunt even by people who pay. That changes placement. I remember an ice storm several years ago that a lot of paid hunters didn't show and I was invited out and would have gotten a good spot but I was ICED in myself less than an hour away.

I wouldn't worry about what area you get. You can take Monday afternoon to scout your area really well to find a trail to set up on. You won't run the deer off. They're used to all us hog hunters. They'll come back.

Just make sure you have all your stuff and be ready to see a monster at any moment.

Please shoot a doe and as many hog as you can.

Don't shoot the button bucks; some are as big as does already. Use you binoculars.

Enjoy the WMA, it's a true Texas treasure Johnny and Trey have made better every year.

PS. Do not bring a firearm to the WMA other than your concealed carry piece. If you take a firearm onto the unit and the gamewarden checks you and finds it(and they look for this one specifically) you will be ticketed.

Remember to keep it at the hotel or at home.

I am thinking about showing up for the standby positions next hunt. Do you think the odds are in my favor that I would still be able to hunt? How much do you have to pay if there are standby positions?

I didn't see any last week in G. I'll say the plot didn't look good in general.

I did find army worms in one of my food plots yesterday.

Went below the dam last Saturday. Oh boy, it was COLD! 43F at dawn. Plenty of tracks but no hog. I went there at same spot 2 weeks ago, someone left broken arrow in the ground. I didn't pay attention to that. Last Saturday, I went to the same spot where I found the broken arrow. It was bait for hog. At first, I didn't realize what it was there for. Now there are 2 small carters busted by the hogs. Hummm... sure enough that there are hogs somewhere. I am sure that they found the bait within 2 days. Just wonder who put the bait there...

Oops! I meant crater, didn't notice that I mistyped that word. It meant a "bowl-shaped" hole in the ground. Hogs dig in the ground for foods, using their tusks.

It isn't even called broken arrow bait. Just bait. The broken arrow was there as marker, that's all.

Yeah, have to go back several times and be patience. Soon or later, they will come back. Remember that they are very active at nights that we are not allowed to hunt during the dark hours.

Hunting Granger is really hard work. I like it because its hard. Most people go there once or twice and then give up. I do not blame them.

Yes you can bait but IMO it does not work very good. I put up a feeder last year but they never came to it while it was light... Except for once when I had it in the thick ragweed, I saw one right before dark but never stepped out.

In order to bait you need to find out where the pigs bed up during the day, without busting them out. Then in the afternoon make a light corn trail around where they bed and then sit in a tree down wind from the corn trail. IF they hit the corn right before dark they will feed and move fast IF your corn trail is light enough. 2-4 lbs of corn should get you a 100 yard trail.

But just because you find where they bed one night does not mean they will be there the next, but it works sometimes.

Nice weather is bad for hog hunting. I like overcast or at least mostly cloudy. The only time I had a hog come to bait during legal hours was on an overcast evening.

Have to take some time off in January and spend a few quality days camping and hunting at Granger. If you see a hammock and a fire with a longbow hanging in the tree stop on by.

This morning, more heavy fogs. Fog is bad for hunting hogs??? Why is that? I know heavy overcast is good but I don't see fog being bad for the hunting.

Hey guys, I was wondering what you all prefer for hog hunting. Spot and stalk or setting up a blind and baiting them on a regular basis in one spot with a feeder of some sort. I've been out there a few times now and still haven't seen anything except some occasional sign so I'm wondering if I'm doing everything right with spot and stalk.

Putting up a feeder IMO is a bad idea. First off the hogs will hit it at night time and second there is a good chance it will be stolen. I put up a feeder when I first started hunting at granger and did all this hard work to carry the corn, feeder and hang-on stand and it was stolen the second week I had it up. Talk about being ******. I have never used a feeder since. I have made a few hog tubes which are easy and cheap to make.

The best thing to do out at granger it to walk and stalk. The reason I call it walk and stalk because you have to move slowly like you are stalking a hog the whole time you are walking.

Have never been out to Granger yet. I'd like to get out there sometime soon. I'd like to wait for all the deer hunting to calm down though. Maybe I'll get out there the first of the year.

Awesome thread by the way!! Way too much reading for the little bit of time I have to read it.

Thanks!!

Feeders will do you little to no good out there. Stay mobile, move slowly, and listen. 9 times out of 10 you'll hear them before you see them. Before I got my lease out there I spent lots of time on the WMA and killed bunches of hogs. My favorite days were calm days where you could go to areas you know they bedded and listen for them to get up in the evenings. Once you hear them moving/feeding, try to get ahead of them. They move quick so make a wide circle and stay downwind. It's mostly a learning process until you find places they bed on a normal basis. Most often it's in thick bloodweeds.

That would be a challenge for me. I have to walk very quiet because I can't hear them as I am deaf. All I know is that I know that not to step on anything that snaps. :-)

All the park is closed till friday except Sorefinger and hwy 95 so we went down the river. It gets really thick back there. No sign, just tons and tons of misquitoes. There were some kids out there as we were just getting there and you could here them shooting off some guns. Must of been hand guns cause when they walked back up they did not have anything as far a rifles. It also sounded like and auto pistol. With that shooting and bugs we only looked around for 2 hrs and headed back. Intresting area when you back deep in those trees.

Anyone going out sat or sun. I cant make up my mind which. Sunday calls for overcast and maybe rain. Sat is sooner.

Went out by the dam 2 30 till 5pm. Found scat but no hogs. Never been to this part so it was a great scouting trip. Lots of leg work.
