    OK ready...Deep breathe.
Unions deliver higher wages and benefits and bring a higher standard of living. Down sides to some unions is they protect the trash of your trade. They don't perform, but they make and receive the same as you. Another downside is EVERY politician that supports unions is basically anti gun and anti hunter. It forces you to have to keep your mouth shut if you are pro gun and pro hunt. Sometimes unions force you to give your money in donations to people who wish destroy what you love and hold dear. Just so you keep your job(they never say it, but the thought hangs).
    The pros.
My experience if your a loyal soldier, and you walk lock step with them. You can make money. That is why I wake up every morning, to earn. I did it for a while. I have been in the IBEW for 33 years and I have not wanted for my family at all. I got married, bought a house, raised 3 sons, own 3 pieces of land in two states. My medical, dental and RX have all been taken care of. Copays are $30 but big deal. RX $5. I have a Pension, hourly Annuity and a 401K(matched up to 7%) all paid for by my employers the last 33 years. Full workers compensation and all the training I want for free. I have not always worked full years due to lack of work and injuries. But the way my union had it set up was myself and many others getting by without losing their home while unemployment was rampant with a work sharing program. Even though I have union representation, it does not mean I have a guaranteed job. It is construction, and if you do not perform, you do not work. After 3 bad layoffs, my union makes you go out and get your own job and prove you can hold a job for 6 months and come back and MAYBE they will reinstate you. Its a union, but if you don't work and get into trouble. You don't become employed. That simple. They find us work. Can't find your own.
There was a time when there was no workplace safety and rules. That us where unions shined and every employee in the country whether union or not benefited from them. Like the 40 hour work week and the weekend. OSHA. NIOSH. Brought to you by unions.
Approx 9% of the workforce in the USA is Union.
Horrible part, for all the good unions do; they are associated with the scum of Washington that support illegal immigration who I must now compete with for jobs. I have taken a down grading within my union because of my pro gun pro hunt pro NRA conservative stance. I have a only a few more years until I retire so. No big deal.
My union says vote with your wallet. I say what good is a job without a country?

If your "current" goal is more money and a opportunity to provide more for your family/yourself I guess they call that a NO BRAINER......even if for a short stint! Nobody has been held to staying on a job........well not since the Civil War ended slavery!!! If it is not for you, resign and take another opportunity.

      putting it precisely and simply!!!

Unions have done the working man a lot of good. Overtime pay, benefits, etc. But,sometimes they hurt themselves as in overstaffing jobs, cant hard to terminate slackers, strikes to meet an agenda, etc. As someone above said" A good paying union job beats no pay". If that's your only option then it doesn't sound like a bad option.

In some cases but working for AT&T I was union ( CWA ) and its not on my resume AT&T is.

Im sure 99% of the people I encountered had no clue I was a union member.

Of course, but it’s applying at other shops that know your particular area is union @ AT&T.

My thought as well... think it depends to a degree

The union places ive seen are LAUGHABLY bad. They actually call in outside work to come do the job of ppl they already on paper have for the work... it all gets by cause the conpany is billing the government for all of it...

I think they had a place and really helped 50+ years ago... but i think now they are an antiquated system that protects bad works and are so burocratized they only help the ones at the top.

No ive never worked for one. Hope not too.

I work at union power plant. As said above many different sides. I have never needed the Union for defense a single time in 11 years. I am a paying member but really didnt like getting the magazine with Obama’s picture all over it. I have seen guys do hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment damages and not a single one got fired. Some were terrible employees and some were pretty decent and just had a bad day which could happen to anyone. It has provided a good living but I know of two power plants in the area that are not union, and they make a slightly higher wage, have a few better perks, slightly better insurance, and get 2-4x the bonus we get. I have interviewed with both and wasn’t hired either time, although one I had a second interview. If union bothers you that bad move on but if it benefits you take it and run.

Short and sweet and to the point...

This job is at a vessel shop, they just signed a contract with the union to get more workers because all the temp agency's workers were at other jobs, or sucked... I worked for this company a year ago, full time employee, the offer I received from the union is $9 more an hour. My wife is the worried one, all I see is $$$. The reason I quit a year ago was because if 7 days a week every week 12 hour days... it's not that I don't like overtime, but it gets old constantly beeing threatened that if you don't show up on Sunday you will be done.. Union has in there contract 40 hours, overtime if employee wants but not mandatory...

It's all a matter of conscience...and what you can live with...

They are the biggest enemy of 2nd amendment rights, republicans, and efficiency.

This. ^^^^^ Spot on. My side....I've been an AMT (aircraft mechanic) and a member of the TWU for American Airlines for 28 years now. As a young construction worker in North Texas I was taught to despise the unions. I was not a fan when I hired on but if I wanted the (great paying) job, it was required to join. 28 years later and I'm still not a union advocate. I believe the good slightly tips the scales over the bad though. The union has ensured that the company treats us fairly and has kept our wages good but also fights to keep slugs that have no work ethic at the same level of pay as myself. In some ways its a form of liberal socialism and I'm not a fan of paying dues to an organization that doesn't uphold my beliefs.
Delta mechanics are still non-union and they have always had salary and benefits on par with mine but I believe thats driven by the need to stay competitive with union companies.

I have been a union worker since 1983. Never been without a job in all that time. If you put forth the effort and are good at what you do, you will succeed and possibly advance into a management role if you desire. if you are one that does not make the effort, you will be constantly looking for work.

Probably the same applies in the non union world.
