I'm in. Won't be hunting anywhere that needs it this year but hoping to get NM or CO for '18

Looking for a weight vest right. Lots of kettle bells and starting to run again. I'm wanting to drop another 15 to get back to lean again

I am in the process for getting ready for next year as well. I am 6' and weigh probably about 270, yes that is a lot but I eat unhealthy and lift weights. I am changing up how I eat and drink and also how I work out. I'm starting to jog more and with the dogs, seems like I can go further running with them. Also I have started meal prepping and cut out soda's, and cutting back on sweets like ice cream and what have you.

Really looking forward to next year and hope to draw out for a mule deer in New Mexico!

I'm 25 pounds heavier than last time I got off Colorado mountain. I plan to let Chris Martin carry my stuff.

No BS. I've never had a problem hiking with a pack physically it's the not being able to breathe part that kills me. Last year we were above timberline our whole hunt and we'd have to stop every 25 yards just to catch our breath.

Looking forward to redemption this year and filling my tag.

I'm officially in "pre-hunt" fitness mode as well! This is the time of the year when I switch from pure powerlifting to mixing in lots of rucking, HIIT and general cardio!

Yesterday I loaded up 85lbs in my pack, and hiked 2.4 miles in 48 minutes, including a 200yd run at the end! Running when you're 316lbs (instead of 223) is tough!

My powerlifting has also been paying dividends for my next elk hunt, since I'm deadlifting 530, squatting 425 and benching 330! You never know when you might need to bench press an elk! hahahah

Love reading all of this.

I hunted New Mexico last year and we were at about 8500 feet. I worked my tail off from April until September getting ready. Cardio, weights and a lot of HIIT stuff. I play basketball a couple days a week and have been lifting 5 days a week with a longer weekend run. Last year I had no problems at all keeping up with my guide. So that is my goal for this year too. And I have been following a very similar plan this year.

I will start to add some incline hikes with a weighted pack in my hunting boots in the next month or so.

I am 6'2 185 and would like to get 5 more pounds off before we hit Summer Vacation time. I plan to keep the same regiment as we get closer but up my leg workouts.

1st Elk trip, Colorado mid September. Cross-Fit ON RAMP today after work at 7:30. Will be doing CF for the next 3 months and playing softball. Would like the turn 6' 205 into a lean mean 190 before we hit the mountain.

Nothing planned for this year but next year I am going to get a muley tag (hopefully). I've already started my workouts and when I run at the house my altitude is 7'... a lot different than 12k'. Stairs are killing me if I go longer than 10 min.

I am way out of shape and hate that I let myself get this bad even though I'm 6' and 190. Going to be a long journey but it will be worth it to stand on a mountain with a tag punched and heading back to the truck.

Keep it going guys and good luck toeveryone this year.

Lol dude it's bad. Stairs are not fun. I've learned that slim has nothing to do with endurance. Big boys kick my butt in cardio every morning in the gym.

Sitting at 235 today at about 15%. Hoping to loose some muscle but not too much while leaning out. Hoping to get down to about 220ish by September.

Dang it, Darrin. I just remembered I was supposed to call you this evening. I'll try you tomorrow.

I did an hour in the weight room today and then 2 miles on the treadmill at the steepest setting. I'm thinking I probably should do a lot of bicycling before August so I won't get saddle sore on our hunt.

I also need to shoot my bow at 50 yards. Let me know when you want to start hiking the hills. I'm serious

It is a watch with a pedometer that track steps and you can download/track your data on your phone.

In my personal opinion... hiking fitness comes from being on your feet and moving alot as much as you can. Crossfit, P90x, lifting, and all that jazz is great (I do that too) but none of those things help you when what you need to do is keep your feet moving forward.

A great workout I did recently was to walk, for a hour, with a 15lb dumbell in each hand. I stopped every 5 minutes and did 10 pushups. So I got 3.5 miles walking... carrying 30 bounds... by hand... with a little chest workout in there.

Chris do you know much about that unit y'all drew? Or going in blind? I know it's right across the highway from where y'all hunted last year so hopefully y'all have as equally epic of a hunt.

Hard to argue with that. You win.

I cut out dr pepper a few weeks back, bought an inexpensive squat rask and weights to start out with and been feeling the pain. Shedding some weight already, slowly but surely. Found an eliptical I'm inquiring about next. No hunts planned, for lack of money, but a need to loose the gut and be more agile with farm work. Everyday chores have been getting harder, along with dealing with the heat... and chasing kids. 34, 5 ft 9 or so, and weighing in at 220. Want to be back to 170 and more toned.

Yep. I slowed down to about a pound a week. Just went under 180 this week. Looking to be about 175 with some upper body tone.... not for the mountains but just for general fitness.

My legs have been sore today so I was gonna use today as a rest day. Figured I would feel like a lazy *** if I didn't do anything so I did a Tabata mile. 20 seconds of work 10 seconds rest. Ran it in 7:56. Anything under 8 is fast for me. Def got the lungs gassed and loosened my legs a little.

I've hunted it in the past, so I'm not particularly worried about getting on deer. You can pretty much find big deer anywhere along the continental divide in my experience. One of the guys that introduced me to backpack hunting about 10 years ago took me there and killed a 170" 4x4.

My legs have been jello for a couple weeks, diet is one of my weak points.

I'll play.

20 straight days of both lifting and running or rucking every day, and joe defranco's agile 11 or whatever it is called.

Been on the football track or stadium every morning at false dawn or the trails out here at the state park with 50#. Lots of flying 100s, 400s and 800s. I hit a sub 60 second 400 the other day for the first time in about forever. My right hip has been talking to me on the trails with anything over 50# so not sure on that.

As for weights, I again purchased the strongest shall survive, it is an old school book from Bill Starr. Using a modified version of it, to fit an every day a week version of what I am doing. Hitting weights I haven't hit in several years on the squat, clean, press and hang cleans, feeling great actually.

I am a frequency guy, some folks aren't. But I bought a BIG ARSE calendar and I started the "don't break the chain" of Xs on the calendar. One maker blue marker for running/ruck and one red marker for weights. So far it has be fantastic for me to visually see it on the wall, and it feels great to get it hammered out every day by lunch. Sometimes life gets in the way and I have to wake up at 4 am to run or I am stuck squatting in my garage at 10:45 at night but whatever, just trying not to break the streak.

As for food, I always eat well for breakfast and lunch, but dinner is always my culprit. With wife and two kids, I just cook most nights with lots of veggies, mashed sweet potatoes and a hunk of meat, but no seconds and no dessert. But my biggest deal is if we go out, go ahead and eat and don't stress. I used to be the guy who would go off the deep end if I ate something crappy once, not anymore, at least not in the past few months. ha ha ha

Congrats to everyone on their hard work this year!!!!! Critters are going to hit the dirt.

I like the way you think sir.

started early this year in february thought I was making good progress till I put 65# on my back for a hike a few weeks ago so I've added that to my routine trying to do that twice a week, along with the gym for weight twice a week and running twice a week(thats all my knees seem to want to do these days). when i hit the gym i do 40min of stair stepper or elliptical before hitting the weights. think i might have to figure out better eating habits I'm 5'8" 182 now and i thing when i started working out in february i was 184 so i'd take advice on that.

Round is a shape...

I'm planning on going in 2018 and started my workouts last week. My plan before 2018, drop 75# so carrying a 50# is lighter than I am today!

Did 4 miles with a 50lb sand bag this afternoon. Gonna have to switch to am hikes cause it was brutal hiking in the heat. Digging the new exo, very happy so far.

Got quiet round here. People taking the weekend off? I didn't. Plenty of heavy weights and bought an eliptical Friday night that has killed me a couple times. Including 30 minutes ago

I didn't have a very productive weekend. I did now and edge and do some house work today. But drank some whiskey this afternoon.

Pretty simple for me. Run 3-5 miles 4 or 5 days a week. Shoot my bow a bunch for an upper body workout and try to eat lean meats and veggies. My problem is my darn sweet tooth. I'd like to be down around 160 but it seems like I'm always about 180

Have officially started rucking instead of walking. Put in about 8 miles yesterday with a generic 13# backpack. Doesn't sound like much... but tell that to my shoulders and back.

Still researching a 20ish Liter ruck that is strong enough to pack 30lbs, could use as a day pack in the mountains, and not break the bank. Tried on a 5.11 rush 12 on saturday and am leaning towards it.
