Default Public land hog down with my son

My son is getting old enough that I'm able to start taking him out with me more and more. It makes things very difficult but it's better than sitting at home or at the park with him. I have been lucky enough to kill a couple hogs over the last week with him with me. It's pretty exciting to see how much he loves it at only 19 months old!

Trying to get pictures resized is a pain.

First one was a good sized sow with the muzzleloader. I was able to reload as some little ones ran through the trees and lined up 3 of them with one shot. The boy couldn't help but laugh when we walked up to the three of them flopping.

I did the little ones like you would a squirrel. Chopped the heads and feet off and skinned them then split them down the middle. The tomahawk made quick work of them.

This one was last night with the bow. She ran into the river and her lungs filled up with water. She ended up sinking in about 6 feet of water. We couldn't get to her without getting him totally soaked and cold. I had to call for backup so someone could hold the boy while I went bobbing for the pig.

I hope I am half as cool as you when I have my first kid. Getting it done on public is hard enough, doing it with your 19 month kid on your back is freaking epic. By the way your wife must be really cool too!

Ha! That's too cool! I think that's the youngest kid I've ever seen anyone take to the stand. I'm amazed you can get one that young to be quiet or still enough to get any animals near you. Really cool.

BTW, you are ALOT more dedicated that I am to go diving and searching for a sunk pig. A deer, sure. Pig, no way!

Thanks guys! I have to admit that my wife is pretty cool.

Both of these pigs were spot and stalk. I tried setting up a ground blind for him to sit in with me but he is too loud. Even when he is being quiet he breathes too loud. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that killing a deer with a bow with him will be impossible so I've just been working on the hogs. We have had more blown stalks and near kills than I care to think about but things have just been working in our favor lately.

I have an osprey kid carrier that is more comfortable and can carry more weight. That's the one in the first picture. It squeaks a little so when I carry the bow I put him in a Tula. It's nice and light and quiet but he won't ride in it more than a few hours because it has no head support. It's kind of a struggle trying to figure out the best system. In a perfect world I could put him on my front with my kifaru on my back so I could carry out a pig and him at the same time. The problem is I can't shoot with him on my front. So I pretty much have to plan on just taking some choice cuts of meat that will fit in the kid carrier.

All of this cuts into deer hunting pretty seriously but you have to make sacrifices when you have a family.

Every time I see animals I quietly tell him "shhh" and he knows exactly what's going on. It always takes him a minute to spot them but once he does I can hear his breathing get noticeably deeper and more excited. I'm not sure if a kid that young can feel adrenaline but he definitely feels something when he realizes the hunt is on.

The sacrifice is going to be well worth the effort. You're gonna blink and he will be a grown man and these moments you and him will cherish forever. I used to take one of my son's duck hunting while he was in diapers. He loved every minute of it as so did I.

Good job!

Thanks guys. 2 years old now. Hes getting almost too big to carry at almost 40 pounds. Good news is that he can walk almost anywhere as long as the pace is slow. We just got back from colorado where we did some scouting for a possible high country hunt this fall. Put in 13 miles in one day then several hours of glassing the next. He got to play in the snow for the first time too. I hope I can make the hunt happen from a financial standpoint.

So just saw this. Thats awesome! I highly doubt my son would sit quiet enough at 19 months old based on how he is now. Did you use ear plugs or muffs on him? My son won't keep hats or anything like that on his head longer than 2 seconds. Was there any special regs to follow to bring your son on public land?Just telling my wife about this I saw her tense up.. haha

He covers his ears when i tell him to. When he comes with me to the range he wears muffs. He doesnt really have to be that quiet because I was basically carrying him around all day trying to spot and stalk. As far as regs go, I always put him in an orange shirt when orange is required. He wont wear a hat so I always hope any game warden would be understanding. My wife knows that Im a grown man and she can trust me with my son. That trust is really key. Best way to earn it is to invest a bunch of time around the house. Handfishing is the only thing that really worries her.

Gage has been going with me since he was 9 months old. He killed his first animal, a pig, at Granger when he was 11; spot and stalk with a bow.

I can tell you this, the second most exciting day is when your son kills his first animal! It is a blast.

And others are correct, the hard work and sacrifices you make now will pay big dividends later.

Killing stuff with a bow at 11 is impressive. Im not going to push him but as long as he likes to go Im going to keep making it happen. Hopefully I will get to experience his first kill with him too.

We took a buddy's girl pigeon hunting one night and she had a similar reaction. We ended up cutting it short and taking her home due to crying. Some kids like it some kids dont. Another friend's 4 year old son followed three of us grown men through chest deep water (for him) all night while gigging frogs and was sad when we decided to call it quits. Its amazing how different kids can be.

Thumbs up

That's Awesome. I've taken my boys with me and dang they are loud lol, I just give up on trying to find an animal and enjoy the time in the woods. They have hunted the sam and granger. Me and my 5 year old. Covered a ton of ground in the sam, once he wore out I put him on my shoulders for the final 2 miles. He hiked 5 miles that day and was running a good bit of the way.
