I went out to the WMA on Saturday to have a look around. The water is still high in some places. It seems to be draining at a steady pace. I saw four doe and one yearling. The hogs were also out and about. Most of the open areas were covered in grass about 4-5 ft tall. All in all, it was a good trip. I think this season will be tougher than last.

It's getting closer. I envy those of you that live closer to the WMA. My buddy and I are planning a trip to lock down our spots on the 24th.
I'm sure most of the areas I used to hunt are under water so it should be very interesting!

Archer,

Water has gone down. I'll give you that much info. Ragweed is BAD this year. We've had to relocate stand locations and start from scratch cause it's so over grown in some areas.

before anyone says anything, he dropped his orange vest and we went back and recovered it. But this used to be short ragweed years past. It's almost impassable now. Just gives you an idea of what it's going to be like

That's encouraging that the water went down.
Thanks for the info.
Not real worried about the ragweed. Many areas out there with out it.
Good luck

Thumbs up New here and wanting to hunt somerville

I am new to bow hunting. I am making a trip up this weekend to go check out the area. I have never hunted public land and only rifle hunted. I will be there Saturday morning. I live in Schertz, TX area. I am roughly 2hrs and 30 minutes away from there. I am leaving at 5:30 in the morning.

Camping is only avail at overlook and Welch park.

Hunting...
Don't be the guy who comes opening morning walking thru the woods trying to find somewhere to hunt. If you see an area that looks like it's been scouted ... Don't hunt there as someone probably already will be hunting that area

Cool Nails creek flooded out!

I've made a few trips by there to scout for bow season and duck season. And I've given up. It's flooded out and holding way to much water. It's pushed the animals out to high ground. Didn't even see anything on cam. So I moved to Different unit that's higher up. The water has been at least 4ft high is areas and the bugs were insane !!!!!!! To much water not enough birds to make me want to duck hunt it this year either. Standing water has the birds spread all over this year. Good for ducks bad for hunting that area at least.

You definitely want to bring a deer stand. If you notice how tall the grass is in the pic of the young deer slayer, know its like that almost everywhere.

The ragweed is just getting worse. I was out last weekend and everything we used to hunt prior is covered in 6-8ft tall stalks of ragweed. Did see ducks, and seen 2 hunters with limits of blue wings

This will be my third year out there. The ragweed and other brush was ridiculous a couple years ago. The worst part is that you only have to go through it a couple times before you make the perfect trail for others to follow. Cover your tracks fellas so you can protect the spots you've put work into. Good luck to everyone.

Hows it going everyone, I am new to the Somerville hunting grounds. The past years spent at the Sam Houston which is quite a drive from elgin and is why i am wanting to try Somerville. I have not got to do any scouting and since the season is here i am not gonna scare everything by tromping through the woods. hopefully find a place close to the entry area without getting in everyones way. any advice to a new guy to a new area?

I've always wondered on a head on shot like that. Right above chest bone.
How far was the recovery?

Relooking at the picture... or is that the exit wound?

Yes, that is an exit wound. It was slightly quartering away when I made the shot and dropped within 10 yards.

Planning a couple days out there the week of the 24th but need a place to crash.
I can sleep in my truck just need drive way I can sleep in so I don't have to pay the rediculous prices they charge at the campground a night. Crazy request but wanna save money and travel costs.

Hey everyone, glad I found you guys! I am new to public land in this area and was curious about Somerville. I prefer to spot and stalk or hunt from ground level. So a couple questions... How does it work out there in terms of access, parking, etc.? Is there some decent ground level action in the interior of the land where I wont be messing up other people?

Not real sure the whole spot and stalk thing is going to work out that great. Those deer are pretty smart. Not to mention having to deal with whoever you stumble across.
